Armine Karagyulyan began her career in higher education when she fell in love with helping people as an undergraduate student at Cal State Northridge. She earned her BA in Psychology and after some soul-searching, she realized she loved higher education and was passionate about helping college students particularly. She went on to earn her M.S. degree in Counseling, with an emphasis on College Counseling and Student Services from Cal State Northridge. Throughout her journey, Armine has worked at various campuses helping students with academic and career counseling.
She is very passionate about helping students in their personal and professional development and hopes to inspire, motivate, and guide students in recognizing their full potential. Her philosophy weighs heavily on the concept of fostering interdependence among students. Ultimately, the vision of witnessing growth in students is the most rewarding aspect of the profession and is her motivation and commitment to the counseling field.

Belem Enciso earned a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from California State University, Los Angeles. She went on to complete a Master’s Degree in Education, Option Educational Foundations from Cal State LA. During her professional career at Cal State LA, she has had the opportunity to work in both areas of Student Affairs and Academic Affairs. She joined the CBE family as an Academic Advisor in 2012. She is dedicated to assisting students achieve their academic and professional goals.

Beth Yuan graduated with a B.A. in International Relations from University of California, Davis, and a MBA from California State University, Los Angeles. She has over 15 years of experience at Cal State L.A., working in various departments like Extended Education, Admissions, and currently serves as an academic advisor. Beth volunteered at the Billie Jean King & Friends Event. She enjoys reading, traveling, and the nature.
Briseña Castañeda received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a minor in Criminology and a Master of Science in Counseling with an emphasis on Student Affairs and College Counseling from California State University, Fresno. Her work experience in career counseling and academic advising has allowed her the opportunity to assist students in achieving the transition from a student to a professional. As an advisor, she strives to help students successfully navigate through their academic careers while exploring educational and career options. The best part about being an advisor is having the opportunity to make a contribution to a students’ academic development through encouragement and creating a collaborative environment that is supportive. Outside of work she enjoys traveling, reading, and spending quality time with her family.
Elizabeth Rubalcava, Professional Staff Advisor (For students' last name from Liu - Nase)
Elizabeth Rubalcava earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from UC Riverside, where she was a Peer Mentor and first realized her passion for helping students succeed. After working as a substitute teacher for a while, she decided to return to helping students in higher education. That decision ultimately led to a Master of Education in Student Affairs from UCLA. During her time at UCLA, she worked in the UCLA Extension Teacher Education Programs and the LGBT Campus Resource Center. Elizabeth dedicates her time to creating an inclusive environment for students, and empowering them to achieve their personal and academic goals. On her free time, she loves to read, go camping, and spend time with her family
Joaquin Franco, Professional Staff Advisor (For students' last name from Thoj - Z)
Joaquin Franco earned his B.A. in Human Services at Cal State Fullerton and his Master’s in Educational Administration at Cal State Northridge. He is currently a doctoral candidate in the Ed.D. Educational Leadership program at Cal State Northridge. His dissertation is on the first-year transitional experiences of foster youth. Joaquin’s passion and focus is on assisting disadvantaged populations. He has spent years working with groups such as foster youth, first-generation, low-income and AB 540 students. He has worked at Cal State L.A. for 4 years as an Academic Advisor.
Joaquin believes each student has the potential to succeed in whatever endeavors they choose and his focus is on removing any barriers that prevent students from being successful. He believes on taking a holistic approach to advisement focusing on the students’ strengths to acknowledge the power they possess and to empower them to become good global citizens.

Monica Lee graduated from UCLA with a Master’s in Education, along with a single-subject teaching credential in Science (Biology, Chemistry, General Science) and Physical Education. She started her career in teaching middle and high school for a few years before transitioning to Higher Education. Along with being an Academic Advisor for the College of Business and Economics, Monica also teaches Kinesiology courses as adjunct faculty within the college of Health and Human Services.
Siu Leung, Professional Staff Advisor (For students' last name from Esd - Here & BHP students)
Siu Leung is originally from Hong Kong and grew up in Los Angeles. He got his Bachelors of Science in Applied Ecology (think environmental engineering/sciences) at the University of California, Irvine. He joined the Cal State LA family in 2006 and has held positions in both Student Affairs and Academic Affairs. He also brings experiences from various private institutions with him, including Conexant (formally Rockwell Semiconductor Systems), Prime Wheel (OEM wheel manufacturing company), and eToys (e-commerce company). He also enjoys sports, watching movies, television shows, and art. He has also helped to plan and curate art shows at a local art gallery with various artists and professionals from Disney, Dreamworks, Warner Bros…etc. and is known to have created some art work of his own.
Dr. Janet Vera Lopez, Director of the Student Services Center
Dr. Janet Vera Lopez is the Director of Student Services Center in the College of Business and Economics. Dr. Vera Lopez received a B.A. in Sociology and Spanish Literature from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), an M.Ed. in Postsecondary Administration and Student Affairs, and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership at the University of Southern California (USC). Her doctoral dissertation examined the reasons undergraduate students participate in international education using a gap analysis model.
Prior to coming to Cal State LA, Janet served as the Director of the Student Success and Support Program (SSSP) at Irvine Valley College (IVC). Janet also previously held positions in USC's Marshall School of Business and in the Undergraduate Research Center (URC) and the Psychology Department at UCLA. Janet is committed to student success and has over 10 years of experience in various areas including advising, curriculum development, first-year experience programs, leadership development, assessment, academic support services, orientation, and admissions. In her free time, Janet enjoys traveling, teaching, and spending time with her family and friends.
