Cal State L.A. honors Chinese American community leaders

Library exhibition to celebrate the history of Chinese American families

What:  Cal State L.A. will be celebrating Chinese Americans in Los Angeles on May 28 in collaboration with the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California. The special program will recognize four prominent Chinese American community leaders and the continuing engagement between Cal State L.A. and the Chinese American community.

Who:  As part of the event, Cal State L.A. President William A. Covino will honor:

  • U.S. Representative Judy Chu, who represents the 27th Congressional District.
  • Stewart Kwoh, founding president and executive director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice.
  • Linda Wah, a Cal State L.A. alumna and member of the Board of Trustees of Pasadena City College.
  • Charlie Woo, board chair of the Center for Asian Americans United for Self Empowerment and chief executive officer of Megatoys.

When:  Thursday, May 28, 2015, 12 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Where:  University-Student Union, Los Angeles Room, on the Cal State L.A. campus. For a campus map or parking directions, go to /univ/maps/cslamap.php. Public permit parking is available in lot 5 or the upper level of Structure C.

Exhibition:  Following the awards luncheon, there will be an opening reception of the Chinese America Family History Exhibition at the University Library North, first floor exhibit area. The "Ties that Bind: A Transnational Family from China to the U.S." exhibit is about the extraordinary family of John Chen, a Cal State L.A. alumnus. It tells a story of resilience that is both representative and exceptional to the experiences of many Chinese American families in the early 20th century.
