The Center for First-generation Student Success has designated Cal State LA as a First-gen Forward Institution for the University’s commitment to improving the experiences and advancing the outcomes of first-generation college students.

Cal State LA joins the 2021-2022 cohort of First-gen Forward, which now recognizes and supports over 200 institutions across three cohorts. Selected institutions will receive professional development, community-building experiences, and a first-look at the Center’s research and resources.

“At Cal State LA, we see every day how higher education changes the lives of first-generation students and their families. This designation honors the staff and faculty who commit to making that change happen,” said Vice President for Student Life Nancy Wada-McKee. “We are thrilled to be a part of the new First-gen Forward cohort and look forward to continuing and improving our support for first-generation students.”

More than half of the students at Cal State LA are first-generation college students, meaning that neither parent went to college. The University supports their success through a number of programs like the Educational Opportunity Program’s Summer Bridge, ChangemakersWellBeingU and the Parent Academy.

Cal State LA also supports first-generation students while they’re in high school with programs like Upward Bound and GO East LA: A Pathway for College and Career Success.

“We are pleased to welcome Cal State LA for their long-term commitment and demonstrated strategies for advancing first-generation student initiatives,” said Dr. Sarah E. Whitley, assistant vice president, Center for First-generation Student Success.

The Center for First-generation Student Success is an initiative of NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education and the Suder Foundation.
