Research Overview

Our research operates at the chemistry–biology interface, where molecular mechanisms are translated into functional innovation. We focus on understanding how molecular recognition and structural dynamics govern biological function, and how these principles can be engineered to solve pressing challenges in the biomedical, biopharmaceutical, and biomaterials fields.

Our current research directions include

  1. Understanding how nature’s antifreeze systems work at the molecular level and engineering highly efficient bio-antifreeze systems to enable robust long‑term biopreservation and drive biomedical innovation.
  2. Understanding how antifreeze proteins recognize non-ice molecules and modulate their crystal growth and function for applications in the pharmaceutical, food, sugar, and materials industries.
  3. Investigating the effects toxic metal ions on enzymes and mammalian cells to elucidate metal-ion-induced carcinogenesis and the molecular basis of metal ion toxicity.
