Dear Cal State LA Community,
Last fall, we announced that Cal State LA is participating in the California State University’s (CSU) systemwide initiative to implement the Common Human Resources System (CHRS). CHRS, a new and improved version of PeopleSoft, will modernize how we manage key processes across all 22 campuses, thereby strengthening the services we provide to our faculty, staff, student employees, and administrators.
We are pleased to share an update on the progress of our campus and the work ahead.
Where are we in the project?
Cal State LA is part of Wave 4B of the CHRS project, alongside Sonoma, East Bay, and San Francisco. Our campus teams have been actively participating in configuration, testing, and readiness activities that will prepare us for a successful transition to the new system.
We are currently completing Pass A 2.0, the first major campus testing phase, and preparing to transition into Pass B, including end-to-end testing with campus end-users.
CHRS is scheduled to go live in May 2026.
Timeline
Cal State LA is progressing through the CSU’s CHRS implementation phases. Our key milestones include:
- Pre-Implementation (Oct. 2024 – Apr. 2025): Campus activities to prepare for the system build and initial testing.
- Pass A (May 2025 – Sep. 2025): First round of campus-specific testing and completion of build-related activities and unit testing.
- Pass A 2.0 / Wave 4B (Oct. 2025 – Jan. 2026): Systemwide testing with East Bay, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Sonoma.
- Pass B (Feb. 2026 – Apr. 2026): First full end-to-end campus testing involving end-users and validating all CHRS functionality.
- Move to Production Prep (May 2026): Final campus validation ahead of launch.
How will CHRS impact me?
As we move toward CHRS, several important updates will enhance the employee experience and streamline HR processes across campus. Key improvements include:
- Enhanced User Interface – CHRS features an updated design with fluid pages, tile-based navigation, and a responsive layout, aligning with the existing GET and CFS environments.
- Expanded Self-Service Options – Employees will be able to update additional personal information—including addresses, emergency contacts, disability status, ethnicity, preferred name, gender information, and Paycheck Designee—directly in the system, reducing reliance on paper forms.
- eBenefits and Life Events Self-Service – Employees will have self-service access to enroll in benefits through eBenefits. In addition, the Life Events feature provides a guided process for making benefit changes due to qualifying events such as birth, adoption, marriage, or divorce.
- Optimized HR Processes – CHRS improves workflows in key areas such as time and absence management, recruitment, benefits, and temporary academic employment. A new HR Data Warehouse will improve the quality of HR data and reporting.
These updates will increase efficiency, reduce manual processes, and provide employees and managers with more intuitive tools. More detailed information, demonstrations, and training opportunities will be shared as we update materials and approach the go-live date.

CHRS Update
- East Bay and San Francisco are in the process of joining the existing Wave 4 campuses (LA, Sonoma, Monterey Bay, Pomona, San Marcos, Bakersfield, Dominguez Hills) for CHRS go-live in spring 2026.
- As a result, the CO is splitting Wave 4 into two separate project timelines & testing environments. Along with Sonoma, East Bay, and San Francisco, we are currently scheduled to go live with CHRS in May 2026.
We will continue to share communications/meeting invites regarding testing, training, etc., as we move closer to go-live.
Move to Production/Go-Live: May 2026
- MTP discussions will take place in early February to finalize the MTP timeline.

Dear Cal State LA Community,
We are pleased to announce that Cal State LA is joining the California State University (CSU) system-wide initiative to implement the Common Human Resources System (CHRS). This project will unify all 23 CSU campuses under a single, integrated HR platform designed to streamline and improve HR processes.
What is CHRS?
CHRS will upgrade how we handle HR, benefits, payroll, and other functions by integrating them into one system-wide platform. This system will provide enhanced functionality, stronger data security, and a more user-friendly experience for all employees.
When is it coming?
Cal State LA is part of the fourth wave of CSU campuses implementing CHRS alongside six of our sister campuses (Sonoma, Monterey Bay, Pomona, San Marcos, Bakersfield and Dominguez Hills). Project meetings began in Fall 2024, and the go-live date is scheduled for Spring 2026.
Why CHRS?
Here are a few key benefits of the new system:
- Standardization: Consistent HR processes and reporting across all CSU campuses.
- Efficiency: A consolidated platform for HR functions, reducing manual work and redundancy.
- Security: Stronger data security and privacy protocols.
- Transparency: Employees will have easier access to HR services, making managing personal and employment data more seamless.
Who will be impacted?
CHRS will change how faculty, staff, and administrators perform some aspects of their jobs. The system manages data such as budgeted positions, employment, job, and personal data. Enhancing the system will change aspects of self-service, time and absence management, recruitment, benefits, temporary academic employment, and more. Further communications will let you know what to expect.
