Generative AI Tools

Generative AI tools are transforming the way we learn, work, and live. These tools use advanced machine learning algorithms to generate new, original outputs based on the input provided by users.

Currently Available Tools

Adobe Firefly is a generative AI tool designed to help users generate high-quality images and designs. With the Cal State LA license, you can generate up to 1,000 images per month.

ChatGPT is a generative AI chatbot developed by OpenAI, capable of performing a wide range of tasks. It can answer questions, write content, summarize information, generate images, and much more.

OpenAI's ChatGPT Edu agreement is tailored specifically for the California State University (CSU) system, providing advanced AI capabilities for all students and employees. All students, faculty, and staff will have access to the full version of ChatGPT in a few weeks.

Visit the ChatGPT Edu FAQ page for more information.

Grammarly is a powerful digital writing tool using artificial intelligence and natural language processing to offer grammar checking, spell checking, and plagiarism detection services along with suggestions about writing clarity, concision, vocabulary, delivery style, and tone. Visit the Grammarly@edu page for more information.

Microsoft Copilot is a suite of generative AI services from Microsoft. Cal State LA's licensing grants limited access to several services and requires additional licensing for others. Visit the Microsoft Copilot and AI Services page for more information.

Zoom AI Companion is an advanced AI assistant integrated into the Zoom experience. It delivers powerful and real-time capabilities to help you improve productivity and collaboration on the Zoom platform. It uses information from across Zoom, including Zoom Meetings, Zoom Chat, the web, and uploaded files to provide assistance and summarize information. Visit the Getting Started with Zoom AI Companion Features page for more information.

Selecting & Adopting New GenAI Tools

As with other information and communication technology acquisitions, AI based tools undergo a data security, privacy, and accessibility review. Local campus IT acquisitions require an ICT Purchase Approval Request (ICT-PAR). CSU system-wide IT acquisitions are reviewed at the Chancellor’s Office, with similar scrutiny.

Individual faculty, units, and divisions may request new tools be installed or integrated with existing systems.

Depending on how the new tool will integrate with existing systems, various campus units are involved in the technical implementation including:

  • ITS Security and Compliance
  • ITS Accessible Technology Services
  • Administrative Technology
  • CETL Academic Technology Team

For campus-wide academic technology for teaching and learning, shared-decision making occurs through the Academic Information Resources Subcommittee of the Academic Senate, as well as faculty surveys and focus groups, and feedback from vendor demonstrations.

Some IT acquisitions initiated at the Chancellor’s Office (e.g., OpenAI) may include local input when a campus representative sits on a CSU organized advisory group.
