Why Cal State LA?

Graduate Success

Photo of Exterior of CSULA LibraryFor over fifty years, the Department of English at the California State University, Los Angeles, has helped students develop into teachers, writers and professionals. Our graduates have gone on to teach in hundreds of middle schools and high schools in Southern California and beyond. Many have become chairs of their departments and deans of their schools. Others have taken positions in local businesses and industries, and many have attended professional schools and graduate schools.

Originally known as the Language Arts program at the Los Angeles State College of Applied Arts and Sciences, the Cal State LA English Department has long maintained a reputation for both excellent teaching and important scholarship.

Based on the success of its students, this two-fold emphasis has been especially important to the graduates advancing into Master's and doctoral programs. CSULA graduates have been accepted into master's degree programs throughout the nation and the list of doctoral programs includes many UC campuses (Berkeley, Los Angeles, Davis, Irvine, Riverside, San Diego and Santa Barbara), Cornell, Princeton, University of Chicago, University of Pennsylvania, Rutgers, University of Washington, University of Michigan, University of Maryland, University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, University of Illinois Chicago, USC, Claremont Graduate School, and the University of Massachusetts, among others.

Graduates of our Master's program teach at many of the community colleges, colleges and universities in Southern California. The list below, while incomplete, provides a glimpse of some of our graduates' successes.
