Meet the Advisors

HHS Academic Advisors

Veronica Arroyo

Hello, my name is Veronica Arroyo. My favorite thing about Cal State L.A. is our diversity. I am extremely proud of how Cal State L.A. values and exemplifies diversity here on campus. As an advisor, I am deeply committed to helping each and every student I work with. I seek to cultivate a sense of confidence in students, inspiring them to reach their full potential as they pursue their degree goals. A fun fact about myself is that I have a strong affinity and respect for birds. You can often find me admiring the abundant wildlife on campus. I encourage you to do the same! My super power lies in my ability to find and appreciate beauty and wonder in nature.

Liudmila M. Flores
Liudmila M. Flores

Hello, my name is Liudmila Flores. I love Cal State LA because of the many opportunities it has given me to work with students. Advising means sharing my knowledge and experience with students. It is important because it allows me to inform students about the many opportunities and possibilities that are available to them. Growing up, my family and I had a miniature schnauzer named “Elvis”. I wish that every time I missed my daughters, I could close my eyes and be transported to where they are.

Monica Ling
Monica Ling

My name is Monica Ling and I am a first-generation college student. I have worked at Cal State L.A. for over 18 years. I have served students, faculty and staff as the Undergraduate Advisor for the Rongxiang Xu College of Health and Human Services for over 15 years. Additionally, I have served as a test proctor for the University Testing Center and volunteered at the University Annual Graduation Fair to provide seniors with information and resources for graduation. I received the Outstanding Staff Member Award in 2009. I am an active member of Lions Club International, and I am the Co-Captain of my Neighborhood Watch group. During my free time I enjoy scrapbooking, photo-taking, reading, and stamp collecting.

Ricardo Ramos

Hello, my name is Ricardo Ramos. My favorite aspect about California State University, Los Angeles is the diverse student population.  For me, advising means being able to empower students with the tools and resources needed to make sound decisions in their academic and career objectives.  This is important because the end result will impact their life and the community around them.  A fun fact about me is that I take time to enjoy the beauty of nature.  If I had a superpower I would love to be the only one who could fly.  The reason for this is being able to have the freedom to travel anywhere desired.

J. Gabriel Reyes

Hello, my name is Juan “Gabriel” Reyes. I was born and raised Angelino. I started my career at Cal State L.A. in 1997 and have held positions in both the Division of Student Affairs and the Office of Extended Education. My favorite thing about Cal State L.A. is the supportive community culture.  Having worked in the Graduation Office for over 12 years, I have extensive knowledge of University policies and procedures. A fun fact about me is that during my free time I enjoy exploring Downtown Los Angeles and you can also find me at the Staples Center attending a game or a concert. If I had a super power, I would travel back in time so that I can be an advising gladiator.

Yazlyn Nardo
Yazlyn Nardo

Hello everyone, my name is Yazlyn Nardo. My favorite thing about Cal State LA is the opportunity to connect with so many talented individuals and learn about their passions and goals. To me, advising is a way that I can connect with students and work in partnership with them to achieve their academic, personal, and professional goals. It is a chance for me to learn more about student’s strengths, skills, and unique needs to best support them during their time at Cal State LA. I believe advising is an important part of helping students to navigate their college experience and is an opportunity to support them through their challenges as well as celebrate their successes. A fun fact about me is that I have the same initials as my sister. If I could have any superpower, I would choose telekinesis since it would make life super convenient.

Melanie Natividad
Melanie Natividad

Hi there, my name is Melanie Natividad. My favorite thing about CSU, Los Angeles are the students. I’ve never met such a warm, resilient, determined, and humble group of students. They’re an inspiration to be around. I see my role as a guide. I’d like to believe that students and people in general have the answers they’re looking for within themselves. However, there is so much information around degree requirements and university policies students don’t know. Advising means making sure students have the correct information and know all the options and resources available to them. As a guide, my role is to also provide reassurance and support as they journey through Cal State LA.  A fun fact about me is that I cut my own hair! It has saved me so much time and money, and my hair is always cut exactly the way I want it. For my super power, I’d love to be able to fly. To be amongst the clouds and have that view of the world would be amazing.

Jessica Llamas
Jessica Llamas

Hello students, my name is Jessica Llamas. My favorite thing about Cal State L.A. is the awesome location, the supportive professors...what’s not to love about Cal State LA? However, my favorite part of this campus is the diverse students! I love our students; I love learning about their backgrounds, dreams, and aspirations. They are incredible and resilient, and I wake up every day thankful to have the opportunity to work with them. A fun fact about myself is that I am a Cal State LA Alumna; I was born, raised, and currently reside in my barrio, Lincoln Heights, North East Los Angeles. I also have three fur-babies that live with me: a sweet male Shih Tzu, a sassy female Shih Tzu, and a spoiled Pug named Eddie (I named him after our CSULA mascot, Eddie the Golden Eagle). As an advisor, we are the communication between the university’s bureaucratic system and the students. As an advisor, my goal is to teach students to advocate for themselves and assist students as they navigate their way through higher education. We are the front-line of student services; my goal is for students to see the advising center as a safe-space to ask any questions. If I had a super power I would want to have the ability to communicate with animals, just like Dr. Doolittle! I love animals, and I have been surrounded by pets my entire life. I would want to help translate animal communication to humans.

Chanelle Guillaume
Chanelle Guillaume

Hello everyone, my name is Chanelle Guillaume. My favorite thing about Cal State L.A. is Café 47! It’s so close to our office and fulfills all of my snack and lunch cravings. I don’t know what I would do without their soup and spinach feta pretzel. The staff are so friendly and it’s a good, or bad thing, that they remember my name. Advising to me is having  meaningful conversations about academics, career goals, and personal expectations. These types of conversations look different every time and can happen at different times. Being able to address all parts of student life is not only incredibly important in order to offer well-balanced guidance and advice, but also provides the opportunity to connect with students. A fun fact about me is that I love to play video games and enjoy watching college eSports like Overwatch League! For my super power, I think it would be cool to have the same powers as Dr. Strange because I think having magical powers would be so much fun especially being able to fast travel to places.

Melissa Salas
Melissa Ruelas

Hello there, my name is Melissa Ruelas and I started a career in advising to assist students in attaining their academic dreams. I use my experiences as a first generation college student to advise students in their education. It is important to me, that you as a student, feel supported in your education. My favorite aspect about Cal State LA is the diverse population of students (and their sense of humor). One aspect of my life that I would love to share with you is I grew up playing soccer, I coached a high school girls’ soccer team, and to this day I spend my weekends playing. If I could choose a superpower I would choose teleportation.  P.S. when we meet for an advising session I would love to learn about your educational journey to Cal State LA. I look forward to working with you towards your educational gooooal!
