The James Newton Endowed Scholarship in Music

We are pleased to announce that California State University, Los Angeles, has established The James Newton Endowed Scholarship in Music. Our goal is to endow two annual scholarships, in perpetuity, and we are making great progress!

These scholarships:

  • Honor composer/flutist/scholar James Newton, a Cal State LA Distinguished Alum,
  • Support a current student majoring in music composition or Jazz performance,
  • Build a network of Newton Scholars who thrive in diversity, uplift one another, and pay it forward to future Newton Scholars

In March 2023, James Newton met with the first two recipients of the scholarship – Raquel Dominquez, pursuing a BA in Music Composition, and Abel Aguilar, pursuing a BA in Jazz Studies. A Music Department faculty committee selected these students from among a group of music major applicants—the selection criteria emphasized composition or Jazz performance majors.

We seek your contributions to help meet the remainder of this goal: the future students, James Newton, and the University would greatly appreciate your donation.
