NOTE FROM THE CHAIR
Many students are concerned that CHDV 344 and CHDV 444, which are required for graduation for all students who entered after Fall 2011, will not be offered in the 2013-2014 academic year. Please note that the Department will be evaluating student need for these courses and will adjust scheduling in order to meet demand.
If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Ledesma or Ms. Liudmila Flores.
LETTER FROM THE CHAIR
Dear Students,
Welcome to a new academic year! The Department of Child and Family Studies faculty and staff are eager to work with you in achieving your academic goals. We start the new academic year with many opportunities that offer hope, in spite of the many challenges confronting the CSULA community and public higher education.
The Department advisors are committed to work with students in developing academic plans that will lead to graduation. If you are a “super senior”, it is important for you to stay in close contact with department advisors as we explore options to ensure your graduation in a timely manner. We encourage all students to meet with an advisor each year to review progress to the degree.
New and continuing students are invited to join the “Pathways to Graduation” program. The program, in its second year, offers peer mentoring and academic and social support services. Students, who actively participate in the program, will continue to receive priority registration in selected courses. The Department will offer a variety of workshops on professional development, graduate education and issues for the profession. I encourage you to check the Department calendar and to participate in these workshops.
In Fall 2012 and Winter 2013, the Department will offer two new courses that are required for all students who entered CSULA after Fall 2011. CHDV 344 (Family Resource Management) and CHDV 444 (Family Life Education Methodology and Professionalism) are now part of the core curriculum. These courses will be offered every other year, so it is critical that students who plan to graduate before Fall 2014 take the courses this year. These courses meet requirements established by the National Council on Family Relations, which provides certification for those who wish to pursue the profession of family life education. Our new undergraduate program meets the standards for students to apply for the Certified Family Life Education credential after graduation.
The Department will host a “Welcome Back Reception and Orientation on Monday, October 1 from 3:15 – 4:15 pm in Fine Arts 219. This is your opportunity to meet the faculty and discuss important policies, procedures and academic planning for the coming year. We will host Department/Faculty Open House on Tuesday, October 2 – Thursday, October 4 from 3:00 – 4:30 in the main offices, E & T A 505. Please make plans to attend both events.
If you have ideas about how to strengthen our CFS community or ideas about workshops that you would like offered, please let me know. I hope that you will have a successful academic year, and I look forward to meeting and working with you this year.
Sincerely,
Dr. Ledesma
