S.A.V.E. is a one-hour gatekeeper training program provided by VA suicide prevention coordinators to veterans and those who serve veterans. S.A.V.E consists of the following five components:

1. Brief overview of suicide in the veteran population

2. Suicide myths and misinformation

3. Risk factors for suicide

4. S. A. V. E. will help you act with care and compassion if you encounter a person who is suicidal. “S.A.V.E.” summarizes the steps needed to take an active and valuable role in suicide prevention:

  • Signs of suicidal thinking.
  • Ask questions.
  • Validate the person’s experience.
  • Encourage treatment and expedite getting help.

5. The Lived Experience panel consists of veterans and military family members who have directly or indirectly dealt with the effects of suicidality. Hear the real stories and develop some tools and positive takeaways to be part of the community operation to decrease/end veteran suicide rates.

Objectives:

1) The scope and importance of suicide prevention

2) The negative impact of myths and misinformation

3) How to identify a person at risk-signs symptoms

5) How to gain information to help the person

6) How to refer a person for evaluation and treatment

This event is open to ALL that have a vested interest in helping those who are experiencing mental health crises and suicidal ideations.

This event will include an extremely brave panel of veterans who will share with the community their experiences, including their struggles and their recovery by embracing multiple modalities of health, healing, and help.

The L.A. Suicide Prevention Network and the VA Suicide Prevention Coordinator will lead a S.A.V.E. training to empower participants with active and valuable tools for suicide prevention.

This event is focused on helping to understand the challenges many of our veterans and their families face while addressing mental health and suicide prevention as well as helping to enhance positive working relationships and joint visions between the veterans and all the community partners standing ready to help our veterans and their families.
