Francisco Balderrama

Francisco Balderrama (Emeritus, Chicano Studies/History) presented a discussion of his book, Decades of Betrayal: Mexican Repatriation in the 1930s, at the Washington Irving Branch Library for its Connecting Cultures program, Los Angeles, CA, Oct. 12, 2019.

David Blekhman

David Blekhman (Technology) delivered an inaugural lecture as a Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Alternative Energy Technology in Sweden. Blekhman is teaching specialized courses in alternative energy technology at Chalmers University of Technology through spring 2020. His lecture was part of this year’s Chalmers Sustainability Day on Nov. 8, 2019. As a Fulbright scholar, he was also invited as a special guest to attend the Nobel Prize Ceremony at the Stockholm Concert Hall in Sweden on Dec. 10, 2019.

James Brady

James Brady (Anthropology) conducted archaeological excavations at Chichén Itzá, Yucatan, Mexico in August 2019 with graduate student Christina Iglesias and former student Humberto Nation, now a doctoral student at Oregon State University. He presented a paper, “Ritual Termination of Balamkú at Chichén Itzá,” co-authored with Cal State LA instructor Melanie Saldaña and Mexican archaeologist Guillermo de Anda, at the 10th Annual South-Central Conference on Mesoamerica held in Baton Rouge, LA, Oct. 18-20, 2019. Brady also presented a paper, “Una nueva interpretación del Osario en Chichén Itzá,” in the Primer Coloquio de Arqueología del Gran Acuífero Maya at the Museo Nacional de Historia in Mexico City on Nov. 20, 2019.

Choi Chatterjee

Choi Chatterjee (History) gave an invited talk, “Leo Tolstoy and Rabindranath Tagore: Principles of Global Thinking,” at the Colegio de Mexico Center for the Study of Asia and Africa in Mexico City, Oct. 17, 2019. Chatterjee, along with Afshin Matin (History), Wat Kit Choi (Sociology) and Robert Weide (Sociology), also presented panel discussions during the international conference, “Politics of Autonomy beyond Nation-State: History, Theory, Practice,” at the University of Sussex in England on April 4, 2019.

Domnita Dumitrescu

Domnita Dumitrescu (Emerita, Modern Languages and Literatures) presented the following: “Las reseñas de Hispania al correr del tiempo: siempre al tanto de las últimas novedades académicas” at the 100 Annual Conference of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese in Salamanca, Spain, June 25-28, 2018; “La enseñanza de la pragmática a los estudiantes de español como segunda lengua” at the 2nd Congress of the North American Academy of the Spanish Language in Washington D.C, Oct. 5-7, 2018; an invited plenary session titled “Actos de habla a través de las culturas: Implicaciones para la enseñanza del español como L2” at Jornadas de actualización en español como lengua extranjera, Universidad de Costa Rica, April 24, 2019; and “Variación lingüística y modelos de lengua en las aulas estadounidenses: Resultados de un cuestionario” at the 101 Annual Conference of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, San Diego, CA, July 8-11, 2019.

Taylor Dark

Taylor Dark (Political Science), fourth from right, helped the Cal State LA Political Science Association organize a field trip where political science students had an opportunity to visit the California State Capitol in Sacramento, CA, April 1-2, 2019. The group met with elected officials, including Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon and Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis.

Elaine Draper

Elaine Draper (Sociology) was a presenter and chair of the Distinguished Article Award in the Sociology of Law for the American Sociological Association in New York, August 2019. The association also recently appointed Draper to chair the Public Understanding of Sociology Award and to serve on the selection committees for the Donald Light Award for the Public Practice of Medical Sociology and the Marvin Olsen Student Paper Award in Environment and Technology.

Barry Hunt

Barry Hunt (Management), center, presented a lecture, "Becoming a Healthcare Manager: Understanding Costs of Care In Your Community and Beyond," during the Health Information Management Systems Society Roundtable Healthcare Speakers Talk at the California Endowment, Los Angeles, CA, May 23, 2019.

Donald Johnson, Katherine Roberts and Jay Vargas

Donald Johnson, Katherine Roberts and Jay Vargas (Criminal Justice and Criminalistics), along with their students, delivered a presentation during the poster session at the 133rd Semi-Annual Seminar for the California Association of Criminalists in Oakland, CA, May 13-17, 2019.

Silvia Martin

Silvia Martin (Marketing), along with Raj Javalgi and Luciano Ciravegna, presented the paper, “Marketing Capabilities: Competitive Strategy and International New venture Performance,” at the 10th Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Knowledge and Academy Conference, Verona, Italy, June 11-13, 2019.

Gustavo Menezes

Gustavo Menezes (Civil Engineering) was the guest speaker during the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District’s National Hispanic Heritage Month observance at the Corps’ LA District Headquarters in downtown Los Angeles, Sept. 19, 2019.

Patrick B. Sharp

Patrick B. Sharp (Liberal Studies) presented a lecture, “Angels and Amazons: The First Women of Science Fiction,” at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Library Special Collections, Cal State LA, Oct. 23, 2019.

Kathleen Sullivan

Kathleen Sullivan (Anthropology), along with Christine Whitecraft of Cal State Long Beach and Cal State LA graduate student Raul Iglesias, produced the online story map, “Alamitos Bay Through Time,” for the Water Changes Everything exhibition at the Historical Society of Long Beach. The story map is currently on exhibit through June 13, 2020.

Richard Wearn

Richard Wearn (Art) presented a one-person exhibition in Taipei, Taiwan, at ArtFormosa, one of Asia’s leading international contemporary art fairs, 2019. He also exhibited a second installation project at the Shanghai International Art Fair. Following the exhibition in Shanghai, he spent a week as a visiting artist at the University of the Philippines, Manila. He was also invited to The Shenzhen International Art Fair to provide commentary on a selection of artists presented at the fair. Wearn also completed a two-week visiting artist residency at the National Taiwanese University of Arts in Taipei. He concluded his residency with a lecture at National Chiao Tung University, Hsinchu, Taiwan.
