Francisco Balderrama (Emeritus, Chicano Studies/History) presented a discussion of his book, Decades of Betrayal: Mexican Repatriation in the 1930s, at the Washington Irving Branch Library for its Connecting Cultures program, Los Angeles, CA, Oct. 12, 2019.

David Blekhman

David Blekhman (Technology) delivered an inaugural lecture as a Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Alternative Energy Technology in Sweden. Blekhman is teaching specialized courses in alternative energy technology at Chalmers University of Technology through spring 2020. His lecture was part of this year’s Chalmers Sustainability Day on Nov. 8, 2019. As a Fulbright scholar, he was also invited as a special guest to attend the Nobel Prize Ceremony at the Stockholm Concert Hall in Sweden on Dec. 10, 2019.

James Brady (Anthropology) conducted archaeological excavations at Chichén Itzá, Yucatan, Mexico in August 2019 with graduate student Christina Iglesias and former student Humberto Nation, now a doctoral student at Oregon State University. He presented a paper, “Ritual Termination of Balamkú at Chichén Itzá,” co-authored with Cal State LA instructor Melanie Saldaña and Mexican archaeologist Guillermo de Anda, at the 10th Annual South-Central Conference on Mesoamerica held in Baton Rouge, LA, Oct. 18-20, 2019.  Brady also presented a paper, “Una nueva interpretación del Osario en Chichén Itzá,” in the Primer Coloquio de Arqueología del Gran Acuífero Maya at the Museo Nacional de Historia in Mexico City on Nov. 20, 2019.

Choi Chatterjee (History) gave an invited talk, “Leo Tolstoy and Rabindranath Tagore: Principles of Global Thinking,” at the Colegio de Mexico Center for the Study of Asia and Africa in Mexico City, Oct. 17, 2019. Chatterjee, along with Afshin Matin (History), Wat Kit Choi (Sociology) and Robert Weide (Sociology), also presented panel discussions during the international conference, “Politics of Autonomy beyond Nation-State: History, Theory, Practice,” at the University of Sussex in England on April 4, 2019.

Domnita Dumitrescu (Emerita, Modern Languages and Literatures) presented the following: “Las reseñas de Hispania al correr del tiempo: siempre al tanto de las últimas novedades académicas” at the 100 Annual Conference of  the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese in Salamanca, Spain, June 25-28, 2018; “La enseñanza de la pragmática a los estudiantes de español como segunda lengua” at the 2nd Congress of the North American Academy of the Spanish Language in Washington D.C, Oct. 5-7, 2018; an invited plenary session titled “Actos de habla a través de las culturas: Implicaciones para la enseñanza del español como L2” at Jornadas de actualización en español como lengua extranjera, Universidad de Costa Rica, April 24, 2019; and “Variación lingüística y modelos de lengua en las aulas estadounidenses: Resultados de un cuestionario” at the 101 Annual Conference of  the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, San Diego, CA, July 8-11, 2019.

The group met with elected officials, including Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon and Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis.

Elaine Draper (Sociology) was a presenter and chair of the Distinguished Article Award in the Sociology of Law for the American Sociological Association in New York, August 2019.  The association also recently appointed Draper to chair the Public Understanding of Sociology Award and to serve on the selection committees for the Donald Light Award for the Public Practice of Medical Sociology and the Marvin Olsen Student Paper Award in Environment and Technology.

Kathleen Sullivan

Kathleen Sullivan (Anthropology), along with Christine Whitecraft of Cal State Long Beach and Cal State LA graduate student Raul Iglesias, produced the online story map, “Alamitos Bay Through Time,” for the Water Changes Everything exhibition at the Historical Society of Long Beach. The story map is currently on exhibit through June 13, 2020.

 

Richard Wearn

Richard Wearn

Richard Wearn (Art) presented a one-person exhibition in Taipei, Taiwan, at ArtFormosa, one of Asia’s leading international contemporary art fairs, 2019. He also exhibited a second installation project at the Shanghai International Art Fair. Following the exhibition in Shanghai, he spent a week as a visiting artist at the University of the Philippines, Manila. He was also invited to The Shenzhen International Art Fair to provide commentary on a selection of artists presented at the fair. Wearn also completed a two-week visiting artist residency at the National Taiwanese University of Arts in Taipei. He concluded his residency with a lecture at National Chiao Tung University, Hsinchu, Taiwan.

Lauri Ramey (Emerita, English) wrote a book, A History of African American Poetry, that was published by Cambridge University Press in May 2019. The book presents the first critical history of the 400-year-old genre of African American poetry.

Domnita Dumitrescu (Emerita, Modern Languages and Literatures) was awarded the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese’s 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award during its annual conference in San Diego, CA, July 8-11, 2019. This award recognizes her lifetime of dedication to Hispanic linguistics, her pioneering spirit in academia, and her 35 years of support and outstanding contributions to the association. Dumitrescu was also re-elected USA and Canada delegate of the Asociacion de Lingüística y Filología de la América Latina, 2019.

Dionne Espinoza (Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies) co-edited Chicana Movidas, which won first place for nonfiction multiauthored book and second place for Latina-themed book at the 2019 International Latino Book Awards. Published by the University of Texas Press, the anthology includes essays by Espinoza and Alejandra Marchevsky (Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies).

John Martin (Public Safety) was recently honored for his contributions to the community at the 10th Annual Coastal Awards Gala in Costa Mesa, CA, Oct. 5, 2019. Martin was one of 10 community members and organizations in the Los Angeles and Orange County regions to receive Above & Beyond Awards from Angel Light Academy's Leadership Training Institute. Angel Light Academy is a nonprofit that aims to teach leadership skills to youth and adults.

Karen McDermott (English), center, is a winner of the 2019 Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting competition. McDermott’s script, “Lullabies of La Jaula,” was chosen among more than 7,300 scripts that were submitted for the competition. The fellows each received a $35,000 prize and the winning scripts were presented during a ceremony in the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills on Nov. 7, 2019.

ChorSwang Ngin (Anthropology) received the General Anthropology Division (GAD) New Directions Individual Award for her work over the last 17 years as an anthropological expert witness helping attorneys and their asylum petitioners to gain favorable asylum outcomes. She was also recognized for her book, Identities on Trial in the United States: Asylum Seekers from Asia, at the GAD Awards Ceremony at American Anthropological Association in Vancouver, BC, Nov. 22, 2019. GAD is one of the largest, most diverse sections of the American Anthropological Association.

Edith Porter (Biological Sciences) was elected to the 2019-2020 Board of Directors for the Southern California branch of the American Society for Microbiology. The American Society for Microbiology is the leading society for microbiology at the international level.

Sara Pugach (History) was awarded a Council of American Overseas Research Centers Fellowship to attend a workshop in Dakar, Senegal, in January 2019. The purpose of the workshop was to enhance curriculum development for the teaching of African history.

Walter Zelman

Walter Zelman (Public Health) was a recipient of the CSU Faculty Innovation and Leadership Award for his exemplary achievements and contributions to student success. Zelman was one of only 19 faculty members in the CSU system to receive the award, which recognizes outstanding faculty leaders who use innovative practices in teaching, course design or support programs that significantly improve student outcomes. He was honored at a reception in conjunction with the CSU Graduation Initiative 2025 Symposium in Sacramento on Oct. 17, 2019.
