Emily Allen
Emily Allen (Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology), dean, joined other CSU engineering deans and the American Society for Engineering Education in Feb. 2019 for discussions with legislators on congressional education and science committees in Washington, D.C., including California Senator Dianne Feinstein and California Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren. The higher education leaders were advocating for Pell Grant increases and increased funding for STEM education at minority-serving institutions.

Sara Bardales, Elijah Dow, Noelle Machian and Lizette Toribio (University Writing Center) presented at the 2019 Southern California Writing Centers Association Tutor Conference, UC Irvine, Feb. 23, 2019. The panel presentation, “Bridging the Gap: Older and Returning Students in the Writing Center,” explored the theory behind non-traditional students engaging with writing centers. Supporting the value of tutors’ scholarship, fellow tutors Valerie Longo, Michael Reyes, and Nora Torres also attended the conference. The tutors interacted with fellow writing tutors from other centers in an effort to make visible the experiences older and returning students encounter and the support systems in place for their academic success.

Marina Mondin
Marina Mondin (Electrical and Computer Engineering) attended the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration Meeting in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, March 18-21, 2019. Participants discussed results from the National Science Foundation's Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) and the European-based Virgo gravitational-wave detector regarding searches for coalescing cosmic objects, such as pairs of black holes and pairs of neutron stars. Mondin along with 13 faculty and students from Cal State LA are involved with the LIGO research team.

He delivered a presentation on “The History and Trend of Data Analysis and Prediction with Big Data and Artificial Intelligence.” At the conference, Cal State LA graduate student Dalya Dauletbak received an outstanding paper award for her paper, “Traffic Data Analysis and Prediction using Big Data.”

With the leadership of Andre S. Avramchuk (Management) and the guidance of Professors Barry Hunt and Serj Eyvazian, the 2019 Healthcare Management Team took first place in the Western Regional Healthcare Executives College Bowl Case Study Competition. The team members consist of graduate students Josue Arvayza, Diana Ghaly, Otito Odiakosa and Maurice Tut who also received a $1,500 prize. The competition was held at The California Endowment in Los Angeles on April 15, 2019.
Chris Bachman
Chris Bachman (Mechanical Engineering) secured a $325,000 grant from the W. M. Keck Foundation to establish an Innovation and Design Center that will foster a learning community focused on design and manufacturing. Faculty members involved in this three-year project include Jane Dong (ECST), Jai Hong (Technology), Ted Nye (Capstone Senior Design), Michael Thorburn (Capstone Senior Design), Nancy Warter-Perez (Mechanical Engineering), and KiMi Wilson (Curriculum and Instruction).
David Blekhman
David Blekhman (Technology) was recently selected as the 2019-20 Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Alternative Energy Technology. As a Fulbright Distinguished Chair, Blekhman will teach specialized courses in alternative energy technology at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, starting in the fall of 2019 and continuing into spring of 2020. He will also collaborate with the Chalmers faculty on research related to alternative energy technology.
James Brady
James Brady (Anthropology), co-director of the Great Maya Aquifer Project, helped rediscover a 1,000-year-old ancient Maya ritual cave located about 80 feet beneath the ruins of Chichén Itzá in Mexico. The project is organized by the National Coordination of Archaeology for the National Institute of Anthropology and History. The discovery was featured in a recent issue of the National Geographic.
Jilly Ya-Chih Chang and Mitch Fryling
Jilly Ya-Chih Chang and Mitch Fryling (Special Education and Counseling) secured a five-year training grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education Programs to bring together early childhood special educators and behavior analysts, creating interdisciplinary teams that focus on interventions that can improve social communication skills in young children who have various disabilities.
Ray de Leon
Ray de Leon (Kinesiology and Nutritional Science) secured a five-year, $500,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to provide biomedical and behavioral sciences research opportunities to undergraduates. The grant, from the NIH’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, will establish the Summer Program of Research Opportunities for Undergraduate Training (SPROUT) at Cal State LA to offer firsthand research experience to students, along with a paid stipend for the summer. The co-principal investigator is Kimberly Morland (Public Health).
Dolores Delgado Bernal
Dolores Delgado Bernal (Chicana/o and Chicana/o Studies) was presented the Saber es Poder Academic Excellence Award in Mexican American Studies by the University of Arizona on March 30, 2019. This award recognizes a distinguished scholar whose work has demonstrated sustained excellence and long-term commitment to advancing our understanding of Mexican Americans and Mexican immigrant populations in the United States.
Diane L. Fazzi and Cheryl Kamei-Hannan
Diane L. Fazzi (Education), associate dean, and Cheryl Kamei-Hannan (Special Education and Counseling) secured a five-year training grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education Programs to support orientation and mobility specialists and teachers of students with visual impairments as they earn master’s degrees and credentials in special education and clinical rehabilitative services.

Paul Liu (Technology), second from the right, was honored as a recipient of Northrop Grumman’s 2019 World Class Team Special Recognition Award for outstanding performance in support of its Global Supplier Diversity Programs. The award was presented during the recognition awards luncheon at the National Electronics Museum in Maryland on May 16, 2019.
Carole Frances Lung
Carole Frances Lung (Art) has been presented a 2019 United States Artists Fellowship, which recognizes artists for their contributions to the field. This is one of the most important national fellowship programs in the United States.
Sara Pugach
Sara Pugach (History) was awarded a Council of American Overseas Research Centers Fellowship to attend a seminar in Dakar, Senegal, to enhance curriculum development for the teaching of African History, Jan. 6-22, 2019. She was also awarded a German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Reinvitation Grant for summer 2019.
Emmanuel Sanglay
Emmanuel Sanglay (Public Safety), center, was recognized by the California State University with a Life Saving Medal at the Board of Trustees meeting on Jan. 23, 2019. Sanglay was among seven officers across the CSU who received commendations in the inaugural ceremony.

Pamela E. Scott-Johnson (Natural and Social Sciences), dean, was elected to serve as a member-at-large with the American Psychological Association (APA) Board of Directors for a three-year term, 2019.
Xin Wen
Xin Wen (Chemistry and Biochemistry) was granted $50,000 by the National Science Foundation for her project “I-Corps: Towards Thermally Stable Formulations,” 2018.
Deborah Won
Through the mentorship of Deborah Won (Electrical and Computer Engineering), far left, Cal State LA computer science major Abigail Garcia, center, received a 2019 CSUPERB Presidents’ Commission Scholar Award of $8,000 to fund a project titled “Automating Calibration of Wireless Sensor Driven Exergames on a Mobile Fitness App.” Garcia and Won are one of 11 student-faculty teams to be presented the Presidents’ Commission Scholar Awards to fund summer research projects. The $6,000 student scholarship will be sent to Cal State LA’s financial aid office for disbursement and the $2,000 lab support will be sent by CSUPERB to the faculty mentor’s college or department.
