Housing & Residence Life

Resident Assistants and Programming Assistant complete a 13-day training in August before students arrive to campus and in January before the spring semester begins. There were 48 RAs and PAs who participated in this recurring training.

The 105-hour training covers position expectations and many topics that will assist them in Personal, Social, and Professional Identity Development. Some of the topics covered include:

  • Caring for others
  • CSA Training
  • Customer Service
  • Difficult Conversations
  • Diversity Training
  • Duty Response
  • Emergency Preparedness
  • Live in the Fishbowl
  • Mental Health Training
  • Professionalism
  • Program/Event Development
  • Role Modeling/Mentorship
  • Self Care
  • Title IX, Conflict Resolution & Mediation

Learning outcomes include, but are not limited to:

  • Being visible and engaged in their communities.
  • Conducting mediations from the perspective of an RA/PA.
  • Essence of what it means to be a role model and the concept "life in a fishbowl."
  • Expectations on customer service in all realms of their position.
  • Hearing from Director Leonard Edmond on how to be appropriately “assertive” with their residents.
  • Housing and Residence Life policies for enforcement purposes.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the FERPA and CLERY laws
  • Learning about Title IX and mandated reporting expectations from the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
  • Participating in a workshop about perspective and perceptions.
  • Stages of event planning.
  • Student Leaders will participate in activities and workshops in topics surrounding identity, microaggressions, and related topics and how this impacts their role.

We did not collect any data.

The next steps for this program will be to collect program evaluations for each session. These evaluations will allow us to address future topics of training during the academic year.
