Student Testimonials

“Through this program, I’ve learned some history and that there are many similarities between people with different backgrounds. It's important to build connections with people and approach others with kindness and without assumptions... It allowed me to meet new people and even make a couple of friends. We even had a group chat and texted each other about the events.

One meaningful moment that stood out to me was the Love Languages event. I had the opportunity to write a letter to my mom, which I poured all my emotions into. It made her cry, and I am glad she was able to feel my emotions through the letter.”

“Being part of the [ROOTS Scholars] Program really helped me this semester. I learned a lot from the workshops and events, especially about how to handle school stress, manage my time better and stay motivated. The people I met through the program, including staff and other students, made me feel supported and encouraged.

One moment that really stood out was the panel where older students shared their college stories. It made me feel less alone and gave me hope that I could get through hard times too. I also really enjoyed the Lunar New Year event, it was fun, and it reminded me of family traditions I hadn’t celebrated after a while.

Overall, the program gave me tools to succeed and a space where I felt understood and welcomed.”

“Before joining [ROOTS Scholars], I didn’t always feel like I belonged to Cal State LA. But being in this program helped me feel more connected. I saw people who looked like me and understood my background, and that made a big difference.

We had a small group talk about cultural identity, and it felt good to hear others share the same struggles like balancing school with family expectations. That conversation helped me realize it’s okay to feel caught between two worlds and that I’m not alone in that. Through the program, I started to feel prouder of who I am. My culture isn’t something I need to hide or push away it’s part of what makes me strong. [ROOTS Scholars] helped me feel more confident in myself and more at home on campus.”
