Professional Development

Students in the TESOL MA program at Cal State LA benefit from a strong culture of professional engagement. Our graduate students regularly present their research and classroom innovations at leading conferences such as TESOL International and CATESOL, gaining valuable experience, networking with experts in the field, and contributing to ongoing conversations in language teaching and learning. This hands-on involvement helps prepare them to be confident, informed professionals in diverse educational settings.

Demonstration describing Nifty Thrifty, a course that teaches U.S. holidays and positive politeness strategies using thrift store realia. This Demonstration will include a course syllabus, a course calendar, and sample activities. Benefits and possible future uses of realia in curriculum design will also be discussed.

From Disneyland to Wonderland: Analyzing movie Stereotypes

Because animated movies tend to convey unrealistic or discriminating messages, this instructional unit focuses on ICC to make students gain a thorough understanding of other culture to break down stereotypical notions, gain multicultural tolerance and respect, and reduce existing racist barriers and misunderstandings in communication.

Russians Say Please, Thank You, Welcome, Olympics!

The Presentation briefly addresses theoretical underpinnings of Communicative Language  Teaching (CLT) and further describes an instructional unit on customer service skills, which focuses on Russian Volunteer's language proficiency and Prepares students for the Sochi Winter Olympics Games. Learning Strategies will be discussed, and tips for lesson design will be shared.

Discourse Analysis: Topic Shift in Chinese Conversations

The presentation describes a case study on topic shift in Chinese conversations, with the aim of exploring the differences from topic shift in English conversations. Of the presenter describes the theories, methodology, and framework used to carry out the study and discusses the result and ESL pedagogical implications.

The Effect Of Cross Linguistic Transfer
Steward, Joshua Austin Steward 
This presentation discusses the effect that cross-linguistic transfer has on Second Language (L2) learners with respect to reading comprehension, verbal proficiency and reverse-linguistic knowledge. Devices designed to measure cognate and morphological awareness will be shared in addition to how prior linguistic knowledge can affect proficiency in an L2.

Should I Wait For My Turn?
Semerdzhyan, Susanna  The presenter will demonstrate how our culture shapes our views about interruption by discussing the role of interruptive acts amongst four Armenina-American friends and in English discourse. Implications for classroom instruction will be discussed and sample activities will be shared.

This Course integrates culture and focuses on a step-by step process for advanced academic writing, reading and oral competence through the study of American Civil Rights Movements.

Non Native- English- Speaking Teacher Preparation in Korea

Drawing on a paradigm shift of language teaching with the notion of global language, this presentation describes the blind beliefs toward Native-English Speaking Teachers (NESTs) and discusses the issue for Non-Native-English-Speaking Teachers (NNESTs) self perception and confidence as teachers. Effective strategies and skills will be provided with useful materials.
