Template

Foundational Text

  1. Students read a text that is foundational to the course.
  2. Students find this foundational text in a library search engine database or a search engine like Google Scholar by typing in the title, author, or date (metadata).
  3. Students search who has cited the foundational text.

First Source

  1. Students select one article from those cited sources.
  2. Students skim the new (first) source and identify where the foundational text is cited.
  3. Students write a sentence or two about what the first source says about the foundational text.

Second Source

  1. Students continue and follow the citation trail one more time by searching for a second source that cites the first source.
  2. Students write a sentence or two about what the second source says about the first source.
  3. Students discuss:
    • How does the second source build off the first source? Does the second source relate to the foundation text at all?
    • How does identifying the citation trail help explain the core concepts of the foundational text?
    • How would you describe the foundational text based on what other scholars have said about it?
