Welcome to the Geography Department!

GEOGRAPHY at Cal State LA is a program offering opportunities for careers in many different fields. Geography is an ideal discipline for the individual who is interested in either the cultural or physical environment and who enjoys field work and research as well as travel. Geographers practice their knowledge and skills in a diversity of ways, ranging from researching urban or environmental issues to the use of computers and satellite imagery in designing and creating GIS maps.

The Department of Geography and Urban Analysis offers degree and certificate programs within the physical and social sciences that can provide the necessary understanding and skills that will lead to a satisfying and rewarding career after graduation.

Whether studying traditional human-land relationships, elements of the physical environment, or contemporary urban problems, the geographer strives toward understanding the complex interrelationships that are part of both the physical and cultural environments.

Interpreting the cultural and physical patterns of the earth requires training in both observational and technical skills. The department offers specialized course work in map reading, air photo interpretation,  geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, spatial statistics, field methods, and location analysis. These form part of a degree program that offers both variety and specialization.

The department's physical resources include:

(1) a fully equipped UNIX lab with 12 Sun UltraSparc10 workstations for instruction and research,

(2) a computer cartography and GIS lab [Center for Spatial Analysis and Remote Sensing (CSARS)] with a Sun server and 26 Pentium VI workstations for instruction and research,

(3) a fully equipped research lab with servers, large format plotters, and GPS receivers for faculty and graduate student research,

(4) a fully equipped air photo lab with 14 light tables for instruction, and

(5) a map library and USGS-DMA repository with more than 90,000 flat maps and a 7000-volume water resources library.
