Cal State L.A. presents The John Lion New Plays Festival featuring studen​ts and professional artists

Cal State L.A.'s Department of Music, Theatre and Dance will premiere three new plays by Cal State L.A. student playwrights during The John Lion New Plays Festival at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex Intimate Theatre on campus for six performances only—May 16-24, 2014.
 
The festival will feature the following plays:
 
Correr con los Toros (Running with the Bulls), written by Josh Fleming and Jacob Thompson, is about an anxious guy who has traveled to Pamplona, Spain, for reasons of his own to run with the bulls.  This smart comedy will tickle your insides!
 
Child of Promiseby Sandra ChingasiyeniNdunais about a young girl named Thembi who lives on the streets of Zimbabwe fighting to save her unborn child.  An inspiring solo performance with music and song.
 
The Perfect Marriageby Marc Cardiff, is about a mature couple who decided to "un-marry" one another and thus all hell breaks loose when their best friends find out.  A comedy that takes no prisoners!
 
This year's directors are guest artists Laurie Woolery and Armando Molina, and Professor José Cruz González.  Sara Ryung Clement is the guest scenic and costume designer.  Professor Anne McMills along with her students will design the lighting for the festival.  (Lighting design students include: Daniel Ferreira, LilyanaMelero, Alexandra Garrett, Ike Uzoma, Sophie Avedikian, Alicia Ellington, Emma Andreini, and Lisa McMillian). The festival dramaturg is Dr. Susan Mason. Student dramaturgs are Mav Viola, Cynthia Cales, Naomi Bennett, Chad Rstum, and HanaSchultheis-Gerry. The student stage managers are Jessica Morataya, Wendy Arteaga and Alexa Flores.
 
Tickets $12 general admission and $8 student/senior.
 
The John Lion New Plays Festival is named for the former producing director of the Kennedy Center's American College Theatre Festival in acknowledgement of Lion's achievements in theatre and education. Lion founded the award-winning Magic Theatre in San Francisco, which has helped develop many of America's contemporary playwrights, including Pulitzer Prize winning, playwright Sam Shepard. 

 
Since 1997, Cal State L.A. has premiered 60 new plays written by undergraduate and graduate students in The John Lion New Plays Festival. Past highlights include recognition by the prestigious Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival. Each play has been developed through tutorials, workshop readings, and production. Playwrights have collaborated with guest directors, designers, faculty, actors, and student dramaturgs throughout the process.
