Cal State L.A. Women's Soccer
Shocks No. 2 UC San Diego, 2-1

Montebello native Diane Garcia scores both CSULA goals in upset win

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A. sophomore Diane Garcia (Montebello, CA/ Schurr) scored both Golden Eagle goals in the second half as the CSULA women’s soccer team (4-6, 2-4 CCAA) shocked No. 2 ranked UC San Diego (6-1, 5-1 CCAA) on Friday afternoon at Jesse Owens Stadium, 2-1.

Paula Wizel (Arcadia, CA/Arcadia) and Josee Busilacchi (Sillery, Quebec, Canada/ McGill University) added assists in the upset victory.

The Tritons, owners of a 13-match winning streak, tested goalie Alicia Parkhouse (Walnut, CA/Ayala/Mt. SAC) early and often, outshooting CSULA in the first half, 8-1. Parkhouse’s goalplay, along with the stellar defense of Jamie Kupper (Diamond Bar, CA/Diamond Bar), Aundrea Farley (Tulsa, OK/Booker T. Washington), Dinora Chinchilla (Los Angeles, CA/ Lincoln) and Erin Diskin (Chino, CA/Walnut), kept the Tritons at bay, and the game tied 0-0 at halftime.

As the second half began, CSULA’s attack began to wear down UCSD, and matched the Tritons shot for shot. As the shots became equal, so did the opportunities. At the 61:50 mark, Diane Garcia received a free kick pass from Paula Wizel, and headed it past UCSD’s diving goaltender, Kami Poma.

UCSD’s Shannon Harrelson answered at the 72:13 mark, receiving a crossing pass from Lauren Jacobs, and kicking it by the sprawled Parkhouse. The game remained tight until the 85:33 mark when Josee Busilacchi sprinted down the left side and placed a perfect cross pass on the foot of Garcia, who sealed the victory with her second goal of the half.

In the nightcap, the UC San Diego (6-2, 4-2 CCAA) men knocked off Cal State L.A. (3-7, 1-5 CCAA), 5-1. Golden Eagle senior Nikos Gutrugianos’ (North Hollywood, CA/Notre Dame) beautiful header at the 78:41 mark of the second half from Austin Dillon’s (Oxnard, CA/Rio Mesa) corner kick was the lone score for Cal State L.A. UCSD ‘s Tiago Venturi recorded a hat trick in the match.
