| Cal State L.A. Receives Los Angeles, California - November 30, 1998 - California State University, Los Angeles has been awarded two four-year grants from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Related Services, to train bilingual (Spanish and English) school psychologists under the University's three-year M.S. degree program. The school psychology program at Cal State L.A. is accredited by NCATE (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education) and approved by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP). Grant #1 has a behavioral and special education emphasis, while Grant #2 has a speech pathology and behavioral emphasis. Each grant provides $7,800 to $8,000 per year-for up to two years-for each of the 21 selected students. The funds for each student will be allocated for the following: $1,200 per quarter for stipend; $475 per quarter to help with registration fees; $175 per quarter to help pay for text and materials; $300-$500 to attend and/or participate in professional conferences; and $100 to be used to join professional organization. The third year is primarily for internships, and most students have been obtaining paid internships. Students who complete the program qualify for the Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) Credential with advanced authorizations in both school psychology and child welfare and attendance. Students in Grant #1 also can qualify for a Certificate in Educational Applications of Behavior Analysis. The Certificate is designed to prepare students to become behavior intervention case managers and to take the Certification exam in California. In addition, students who serve as school psychologists for two years, after their year-long internships, can apply to the Board of Behavioral Science Examiners to take the State Examination to become a licensed educational psychologist (LEP).
