Cal State L.A. Scholarship
Presented to
Child Development Major

Los Angeles, California - December 15, 1998 - California State University, Los Angeles recently announced Child Development major Laurie Hernandez, a Rosemead resident, as the recipient of the Barnes & Noble/University Auxiliary Services (UAS) scholarship for this fall quarter.

Hernandez is a transfer student from Rio Hondo College and is a graduate of Rosemead High School. Her goal is to earn a teaching credential from Cal State L.A. in order to teach elementary age children. She volunteers at the Calvary Chapel in Montebello and works as a special education aide for the San Gabriel Unified School District.

The scholarship is awarded quarterly to a deserving student who may meet the following requirements: a minimum of 2.5 G.P.A., currently enrolled status, and campus or community involvement.

In addition to the Barnes & Noble/UAS scholarship, Cal State L.A.'s University Auxiliary Services has recently increased funding to complete scholarships that must be matched by the University. In the recent past, these funds were reserved for students receiving the annual TELACU (matching) Scholarships. UAS had added $87,497 to the scholarship endowment fund, which currently totals $162,404.

"UAS is proud to support the University in this way," said Raquel Soriano, UAS Executive Director. "We all benefit from strengthening the support to our students," she added.
