Cal State L.A. Student Receives TELACU Scholarship

Los Angeles, CA - July 10, 1998 -- Cal State L.A. biology major Patricia Yaneth Ordonez, a resident of Los Angeles, was recently awarded a TELACU Education Foundation Scholarship for her outstanding academic achievements.

Ordonez was a runner-up for the 1994 Outstanding Freshman Award of the Cal State L.A. chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, and was one of few students selected to be part of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute-Biomedical Professional Development Program at Cal State L.A. The professional development program is coordinated by Cal State L.A. professors Margaret Jefferson and Raymond Garcia. She has been on the National Dean's List for four consecutive years.

Ordonez is also a 1994 graduate of the Lincoln High School University Preparatory Program (UPP) at Cal State L.A.-a program developed by Cal State L.A. professors William Taylor and Martin Epstein in 1989 to prepare disadvantaged students who are traditionally underrepresented in math, science and engineering for college. In 1991, the ACCESS Center began to replicate the UPP at other high schools. Since 1996, Ordonez has been working with the ACCESS Center as a student assistant helping other students.

Dedicated to placing higher education within the reach of bright Latino students in Los Angeles, the TELACU Education Foundation offers scholarships to Latino high school and college students to help them achieve academic and professional success. Scholarships awarded to students range from $500 to $1,500 per year.

For more information, please contact the ACCESS Center at (323) 343-5173.
