| Cal State L.A.'s Ronald Johnson LOS ANGELES - ThereÂs a new scoring champion in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) menÂs basketball history, and itÂs Cal State L.A. senior guard/forward Ronald Johnson (South Gate, CA/South Gate). This marks the 60th season of menÂs basketball in the CCAA, dating back to the inaugural 1939-40 season. Johnson currently owns 1,924 points in 105 games in a Cal State L.A. uniform (18.3 points per game). He became the CCAAÂs all-time leading scorer early in this past SaturdayÂs game at Sonoma State, a fadeaway jumper for his 1,901st career point, surpassing the previous career mark of 1,899 points set by ChapmanÂs Roger Middleton from 1989-92. Also on Saturday, Johnson tied the Cal State L.A. career assist record with his 268th assist, joining former Golden Eagle All-American Quincy Stinson at the top of that chart. A second-team NABC All-American last season and a Street & SmithÂs MagazineÂs preseason All-American this year, Johnson already owned the CCAA career records for free throws made (566) and attempted (739), both of which previously were held by San Diego StateÂs Tony Pinkins, who played at SDSU from 1955-57. He needs just 37 field goal attempts to set the CCAA career record in that category, currently 1,399 by Cal State Dominguez Hills William Alexander from 1984-87. This season, Johnson leads the CCAA with 21.4 points per game, looking to win the conference scoring title for the third-straight year, and leads the Golden Eagles in assists with 3.5 per game. He stands only 76 points away from reaching the magical 2,000 career point plateau with all four remaining games this season at home.
