 | Cal State L.A. Accepting Applications Los Angeles, California - December 10, 1999 - The Cal State L.A. Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, the national honor society, invites seniors with outstanding records of achievement to enter the competition for the Phi Kappa Phi Graduate Fellowships to be awarded in 2000. To be eligible, students must be elected to Phi Kappa Phi membership, for which the process is currently under way based on data from the Records Office. Students also must be applying for graduate or professional study that would begin in Fall 2000. Phi Kappa Phi awards only 50 graduate fellowships annually, worth up to $7,000 each. Additionally, for 2000-2001, thirty $1,000 Awards of Excellence will be conferred to runners-up. Criteria for consideration in this annual competition include undergraduate academic performance; leadership and service on the campus and in the community; evidence of graduate potential; a personal statement of educational perspective, purpose and objectives; and letters of recommendation from three individuals who can attest to the applicant's performance and character. Each chapter may select only one national candidate from its pool of applicants. In 1998 and 1999, Cal State L.A. candidates Deborah Lee and Rosalinda Martin were selected as fellowship winners. Deborah (1998) is now studying for the M.D. and Ph.D. at UC Irvine. Rosalinda (1999) is now studying for the M.D. at UCLA. An earlier winner, Cynthia Martell, received the M.D. and Ph.D. from USC. But, says Phi Kappa Phi president Ray Garcia, medicine as a field does not get any preferential consideration at Phi Kappa Phi, and this history of Cal State L.A. winners should not discourage outstanding students who are planning graduate study in other subject areas.
