Los Angeles, CA – Exploring the idea of the cyborg and its implication on the art world, Neosapien at the Cal State L.A. Fine Arts Gallery will feature works by emerging artists Robert Arieas, Kallie Clark, JJ Garza, Janne Larsen, Kate and Paul, Kimo Proudfoot, Jason Ramos and Ryan Ross. The exhibition opens Saturday, Sept. 27, with a 6 p.m. reception.

According to exhibit curator Maria-Lisa Flemington, “The cyborg image has plugged itself into the art world with the transcendence of digital information systems that transgress the boundaries of flesh and synthetic, which often blur the distinction between the physical and electronic world.”

Flemington,

a Cal State L.A. alumna, is the curator at Cal Poly Pomona’s Bronco Exhibit Gallery. She received her MFA from CSU Fullerton.

This exhibition—which includes drawings, paintings, sculpture, photography and performance—addresses the concept of authenticity in reference to the human body.

“Through organic processes, integration of artificial and natural systems or the meeting place between computer technology and the human body, the cyborg image has gained a ground in postmodern culture,” explained Flemington.

In their works, the featured artists address their own notions of humanization, mortality, and where they intersect by displaying the cloned body, which is medically improved, genetically manipulated, and mechanically enhanced.

The Fine Arts Gallery is a program of the Department of Art at Cal State L.A. Admission to its exhibit is free.
