Calendar of Events | Balsawood Glider, Packaged Egg Drop and Crystal Growing Among Preliminary Events at Cal State L.A. What & Who: The College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology at California State University, Los Angeles will host ÂPreliminary MESA Day, a mathematics, science and engineering competition. MESA high school and middle school students from Gabrielino High School, Huntington Park High School, Lincoln High School, Pasadena High School, Wilson High School, Gage Middle School, and Nightingale Middle School will compete with their peers in nine math and science competitions for the opportunity to compete in a regional MESA Day competition. Students will design and test applied engineering projects and exhibit their academic skills in mathematics, science and English. When: Saturday, March 29, 2003, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Where: Cal State L.A. is located at the Eastern Avenue exit, San Bernardino (I-10) Fwy., at the interchange of the 10 and 710 Fwys. (Public permit dispenser parking is available in Lots C, F and G or upper level of Parking Structure II.) More: The dayÂs event will consist of the following competitions: Balsawood Bridge and Glider, Model Science, Crystal Growing, Team Math Quest, Packaged Egg Drop, Oral Presentation, Simulated Verbal SAT I, Soil Science and Web Design. MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) is an academic preparation program working with schools and colleges throughout the state. It is designed to bolster the academic skills needed for students to pursue rigorous mathematics and science-based courses of study in college and provide support for them to go on to careers in technology-based industries. CaliforniaÂs MESA received the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring at a White House ceremony in 2001.
