MARTHA GRAHAM DANCE COMPANY APPEARS AT THE LUCKMAN ON FEBRUARY 8
The Company will Present the Los Angeles Premiere of Cool River
Embodying the American spirit of artistic collaboration and ingenuity, the Martha Graham Dance Company engages audiences with her visionary classics and a Los Angeles premiere at Cal State L.A.'s Luckman Theatre on Saturday, February 8 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $30 and $25 for general admission and $12 for students and seniors over 65-years-old. For tickets call TicketMaster (213)365-3500 or (714)740-7878 or the Luckman box office at (323) 343-6600.
The playful Satyric Festival Song, the enchanting Diversion of Angels, the tragic Cave of the Heart, the inspirational Errand into the Maze and the Los Angeles premiere of Cool River will be performed.
Satyric Festival Song (1932) portrays the irreverent bold charm of a satyr and was originally part of a suite.
Diversion of Angels (1948) is a lyric dance about the loveliness of youth -- the pleasure and playfulness, quick joy and quick sadness of being in love for the first time.
Cave of the Heart (1946) is Martha Graham's dramatization of the tragic Greek legend of Medea. The action is focused directly upon the legend's central theme, the terrible destructiveness of jealousy and of alliance with the dark powers of humanity as symbolized by magic.
Errand into the Maze (1947) takes its inspiration from the myth of Ariadne and the Minotaur. Martha Graham took this Greek story as her symbol of the conquering of fear-- through the maze of the heart's darkness to the battle with the "creature of fear."
Cool River will make its Los Angeles debut at the Luckman. Steve Rooks, former principal Graham dancer, conceived a dance of encounters, relationships and partings in the ever changing wine dark sea. The piece, commissioned by Artistic Director Ron Protas, features music by Paul Simon which highlights the youthful, savvy and contagious side of Graham.
Founded in 1926 by dancer and choreographer Martha Graham, the Martha Graham Dance Company is the oldest and most celebrated dance company in America.
