Cal State L.A. Presents Forum on Learning Communities

California State University, Los Angeles presents a campus-wide forum on "Creating Learning Communities on the Cal State L.A. Campus" led by Jean MacGregor, co-director, The Washington Center for Improving the Quality of Undergraduate Education, and Daniel P. Tompkins, Learning Communities Fellow, Temple University.

Cal State L.A. Salazar Hall E184. The University is located at the Eastern Avenue exit, San Bernardino (I-10) Freeway, at the interchange of 10 and 710 Freeways.

Cal State L.A. has applied to the Washington Center to participate in a national dissemination project aimed at strengthening innovative approaches to college teaching and learning by developing "learning communities". The object of learning communities is to help students build intellectual connections with the subjects they are studying and social connections with each other and faculty. The speakers will present information on how colleges from throughout the nation have created learning communities, and how this can be effected at Cal State L.A.
Speakers:
Jean MacGregor is an adjunct faculty member at Evergreen State College and for the past 11 years she has been associated with The Washington Center for Improving the Quality for Undergraduate Education. She is co-author of Learning Communities: Creating Connections Among Students, Faculty and Disciplines and the editor of Student Self-Evaluation: Fostering Reflective Learning.
Daniel P. Tompkins is associate professor and chair in the department of Greek, Hebrew and Roman Classics at Temple University. His interest in learning communities solidified in 1993, when a major grant he helped write was funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts. In 1993, he became Faculty Fellow for Learning Communities, a position he still holds.
