James Engell is a leading scholar in the areas of Romanticism and of Restoration and Eighteenth-Century British Literature; he has written on literary criticism and critical theory, as well as on contemporary cultural and educational issues. His selected works include: Coleridge: The Early Family Letters (1994); Forming the Critical Mind (1989); editor (with David Perkins) and contributor, Teaching Literature: What is Needed Now (1988); editor and contributor, Johnson and His Age (1984); editor (with W.J. Bate), Biographia Literaria for the Collected Coleridge (1983); and The Creative Imagination (1981). More:
The lecture series, honoring the late David L. Kubal, a member of the Cal State L.A. English Department faculty from 1968 to 1981, bring distinguished literary critics to the campus. Past lecturers have included noted scholar Mark Turner, prominent literary theorist J.
