Cal State L.A. Graduates to Tour
with Kaiser’s Theatre Group

Los Angeles, CA – Three of Cal State L.A.’s graduating seniors were offered ten-month acting contracts with Kaiser Permanente’s Educational Theatre Programs in June 2002. They were: Marsha Lyle (Alhambra), Juan Carlos Alvarado (San Francisco) and Norma Perez (Los Angeles-90032).

Kaiser’s theatre programs produce the largest series of touring shows in the State of California. More than 500 candidates throughout Southern California recently auditioned for only nine available positions.

“The fact that 33 1/3% of the acting roles were offered to Cal State L.A. graduates speaks volumes about the caliber and quality of our students and the training they are receiving here on campus,” said Steve Rothman, chair of Cal State L.A.’s Theatre Arts and Dance Department.

In recognition of that fact, Kaiser Permanente has begun working closely with the University’s Department of Theatre Arts and Dance to further develop a relationship between Cal State L.A. as a training program for actors and Kaiser as a major employer of performers.

A sneak preview performance of Kaiser’s newest play designed for 1st- through 3rd-graders, “Zip’s Great Day,” was recently presented on the Cal State L.A. campus. The 45-minute show—filled with song, dance and puppetry—featured four exciting performers including Cal State L.A.’s Theatre Arts and Dance graduate Janet Song (North Hollywood).

Located in the College of Arts and Letters, the Department of Theatre Arts and Dance at Cal State L.A. offers undergraduate programs leading to the B.A. degree with options in theater or dance, a minor for students in other fields, and a M.A. degree. Faculty members are educators and working professionals in their fields. The Department believes that education in the performing arts can and must serve as basic liberal arts and professional training, grounding students in the theories and expression of the social and cultural past and present. All students earning a B.A. in Theatre Arts and Dance complete their course of study with a capstone experience of community-based performance service. Recent productions include dance performances in collaboration with L.A.’s cutting-edge choreographers; productions of new theater works, and the season’s final and critically-acclaimed (Los Angeles Times) performance of “Burning Patience,” in which Cal State L.A. students worked alongside Equity professional actors.

California State University, Los Angeles, is a comprehensive university at the heart of a major metropolitan city. The 175-acre hilltop campus is located five miles east of Los Angeles’ civic and cultural center. Since 1947, Cal State L.A. has been a leader in providing quality higher education. Today, the campus comprises a faculty of internationally recognized scholars and artists, and more than 20,000 students with a wide variety of interests, ages and backgrounds that reflect the city’s dynamic mix of populations.
