Poet to prescribe ‘Two Cures for Love’ at Cal State L.A.
Britain’s Wendy Cope to present
annual Jean Burden reading Feb. 25
Los Angeles, CA – A Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, British poet Wendy Cope will be presenting this year’s Jean Burden Poetry Reading at California State University, Los Angeles on Thursday, Feb. 25, 6:30 p.m., in Cal State L.A.’s Golden Eagle Ballroom.
Cope will read from her collections of poetry and sign copies of her latest book, Two Cures for Love: Selected Poems, 1979-2006. (Admission to this event is free to the public.)
When Cope’s debut collection, Making Cocoa for Kingsley Amis, appeared in 1986, it received widespread critical praise and eventually sold 200,000 copies. She also has edited several poetry anthologies, including Heaven on Earth: 101 Happy Poems. Her own poems for children are published in many anthologies.
Cope is considered among the cleverest poets of our time and the most spot-on parodist in English since Max Beerbohm. She has earned many awards, and in 1998, she was the listeners’ choice in a BBC Radio 4 poll to succeed Ted Hughes as Poet Laureate.

Jean Burden Annual Poetry Series
This series, one of the longest running and most prestigious in the U.S., was established in 1986 by friends of the late Jean Burden to honor her achievements as a poet, essayist, editor, teacher and scholar. An Illinois native, University of Chicago alumna, and Altadena resident, Burden served as poetry editor of Yankee Magazine for 47 years, and published two collections of poetry, a volume of essays on poetry, andsix books on animal welfare. Sustained by a generous bequest from Virginia Smith, the Jean Burden Series has featured guest readers Lucille Clifton, Victor Hernández Cruz, Rita Dove, Anthony Hecht, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Galway Kinnell, Carolyn Kizer, Maxine Kumin, Andrew Motion, Harryette Mullen, Howard Nemerov, Mary Oliver, Linda Pastan, Adrienne Rich, Mark Strand, and Richard Wilbur.
The University is located at the Eastern Avenue exit, San Bernardino Freeway, at the interchange of the 10 and 710 Freeways.
