Cal State L.A.'s
56th Commencement is Sat., June 14

Los Angeles, CA – The 56th Commencement exercises at California State University, Los Angeles will take place on Saturday, June 14, 2003, in the Jesse Owens Stadium, located at the southeast corner of the campus. The colorful academic procession will start at 8:00 A.M. and the formal exercises are scheduled to end at approximately 10 a.m. This year’s graduation speaker is Cal State L.A. alumnus Chuck Smith, president and chief executive officer of SBC West.

More than 20,000 people are expected at this year’s Commencement to witness the conferral of more than 1,200 master’s degrees and 4,200 bachelor’s degrees.

Among the outstanding students receiving degrees are:
· The first graduating class of the University’s President’s Scholars: Nathan Craig Charlton, Hunly Chy and Ciro Alfonso Ramirez, Jr., high-achieving high school students who were among the first to be awarded full scholarships during their four years of study at Cal State L.A.

· Cal State L.A./UCLA joint special education doctoral recipients Michael Kelvin Jason and Patricia Nagaishi.

· Honors student Kathleen Holtz, Cal State L.A.’s youngest 2003 graduating senior, who has been accepted to law schools at Georgetown, Duke, Southern Methodist, Vanderbilt, and University of Massachusetts, Boston.

· Phi Kappa Phi national honor society graduate fellowship award winner Michael W. Tan, 18, an Early Entrance Program student, who will pursue his juris doctor degree in corporate law at UCLA Law School.

· Javon Johnson, who has garnered numerous prizes at local and national competitions as a member of Cal State L.A.’s Forensic (Debate) Team.

· The Firpo family—Mrs. Ngoc-Dung Firpo, who will receive her master's degree in TESOL and march with her children, undergraduates Daniel, 17, computer science, and Verena, 15, biological sciences.

· Double major in anthropology and psychology Sergio Garza, who has done major archaeology research in Guatemala and Mexico as an undergraduate.

The Commencement of Cal State L.A.’s 56th graduating class is a festive ceremony. More than 20,000 people are expected at this year’s graduation to witness the conferral of more than 1,200 master’s degrees and 4,200 bachelor’s degrees.

Where:
Cal State L.A.’s Jesse Owens Stadium, at the southeast corner of the campus. The University is located at the Eastern Avenue exit, San Bernardino (I-10) Fwy., at the interchange of the 10 and 710 Fwys.
