CAL STATE L.A. CELEBRATES "DAY OF THE TEACHER"
Eleven Outstanding Student Teachers Selected for 1997
Los Angeles, CA -- June 18, 1997 -- The Charter School of Education at California State University, Los Angeles recently recognized eleven Outstanding Student Teachers during its annual "Day of the Teacher" reception at the Luminarias Restaurant. This year's special guest speaker was Verna Dauterive, member and former chair of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing and principal of Franklin Avenue Elementary School.
Every year, the Charter School of Education holds a reception to honor all of the graduates of the CSLA credential programs in elementary, secondary and special education, in addition to selecting students who have demonstrated exceptional performance as a student teacher.
This year's award recipients are Caryn Bontems (Los Angeles), Michael Donovan (Los Angeles), Sandra Halajian (Arcadia), Leslie A. Jones (Los Angeles), Lorna Martin (Los Angeles), Jennifer Murillo (San Gabriel), Mary del Palacio (Los Angeles), D. Pamela Richard (Downey), Rona Robinson (Whittier), Karen Sands (Santa Monica), and Ivelisse Topete (Chino Hills).
Each 1997 Outstanding Student Teacher was nominated by a member of the University faculty. Students must have been rated in the top 10 percent of student teachers observed during the past academic year and must have provided exemplary work in the following practices: development and implementation of instruction that encourages students to think; inclusion of students' cultural values and cultural knowledge in lesson content and activities; development of learning opportunities that are responsive to language diversity; development and implementation of learning opportunities that effectively address the needs of children with special needs (special education); knowledge and exposure to the cultures that characterize the school community; development of culturally-relevant curriculum materials; and completion of all the Direct Teaching (student teaching) competencies at an exemplary level.
