CAL STATE L.A. TO CELEBRATE CÃSAR CHÃVEZ DAY
What & Who:
Representatives of the United Farm Workers and labor organizers, including faculty members, will be among those addressing the Cal State L.A. campus community in an afternoon of activities, music and video presentation to commemorate César Chávez Day. This event is sponsored by the California Faculty Association.
When:
Thursday, April 3, 1997, 12:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
Where:
Cal State L.A. University-Student Union, Los Angeles Room. The University is located at the Eastern Avenue exit, San Bernardino (I-10) Freeway, at the interchange of the 10 and 710 Freeways.
Program:
Some of the speakers include United Farm Workers representative Ramon Pinal and Cal State L.A. faculty members Timothy Diamond, Sociology; Louis Negrete and Irene Blea, Chicano Studies; José Cruz González, Theatre Arts and Dance; and Keith Henning, Communication Studies. The California Faculty Association will also present the winner of the César Chávez essay contest during the event. The essay topic is "Remembering César Chávez: His Significance in Today's Society." Refreshments will be served.

César E. Chávez, the son of a migrant farm worker, brought domestic and international attention to the plight of migrant workers by mobilizing a nationwide boycott of grapes and lettuce. "Sí se puede" (yes you can), his rallying cry, gave birth to the United Farm Workers Movement.
