BIOSCIENCE LEADERS, CAL STATE L.A. PROFESSORS CONVERGE ON IDEAS TO FOSTER STUDENTS’ SUCCESS

Los Angeles, CA – “An idea is a feat of association,” wrote the 20th century poet Robert Frost.

To create ideas for advancing the business of bioscience in the 21st century, Cal State L.A. recently hosted a roundtable titled “Managing the Bioscience Firm: Learning from Each Other” to bring 14 executives and senior scientists from industry together with 10 faculty members from the University’s programs in management, biology and chemistry.

Cal State L.A. management Professor Mary Pat McEnrue, a key organizer of the event, said they gathered to increase the dialogue between the University and bioscience executives to ensure that the University’s management curriculum gives students “a solid understanding of the industry and prepares them to succeed in it.“

The May 30 session included representatives from Molecular Express, Amgen, the Southern California Biomedical Council (SoCalBio), GENE Fluidics, Codexis and the Pasadena Bioscience Collaborative. SoCalBio President and CEO Ahmed Enany, in a keynote talk, presented an overview of key segments in the regional and national bioscience industries.

Bioscience industry representatives indicated several ways firms would help Cal State L.A. students prepare for careers in the quickly evolving realm:

● Providing guest speakers who can provide contemporary, on-the-ground perspectives to classes.

● Working with faculty on research projects.

● Serving as the subject of a business case study in management classes.

● Participating in the on-campus celebration of International Entrepreneurship Week next November.

● Providing informal advice and “real-world” examples to strengthen the curriculum’s applicability.

The roundtable also gave those who are forming Cal State L.A.’s new graduate Program in Applied Biological Sciences (PABS) a chance to gauge the future needs of the bioscience business community.

Co-organizing the roundtable with McEnrue were Ellen Drost of the management faculty; and Howard Xu and Sandra Sharp of biological sciences.  For details about ways bioscience firms can engage with Cal State L.A. faculty, contact McEnrue at (323) 343-343-2890 or [email protected].
