New Associate Dean to Head Cal State L.A.'’s
Office of Research and Sponsored Programs

Los Angeles, CA -- California State University, Los Angeles recently announced the appointment of Barry Dorfman (Valley Glen, CA) as Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Research—Research Administration.

In this capacity, Dr. Dorfman assists Cal State L.A. in achieving its strategic objectives related to increased external funding, oversees the processing of all University grant and contract proposals and heads the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, which provides support for faculty and staff across the disciplines to pursue their professional activities.

Dorfman comes to Cal State L.A. after 14 years at Cal Poly Pomona as a professor of physics and interim director of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. He was particularly successful in forging partnerships between Cal Poly Pomona and local businesses and community groups and facilitating international partnerships with Russian universities. Dorfman says he looks forward to continuing similar efforts on behalf of Cal State L.A.

Dorfman received his Ph.D. in solid-state physics from Purdue University and holds a M.S. in applied mathematics (nonlinear wave mechanics) from Clarkson University, where he received his B.S. in physics. He has published in the area of computer modeling of the dynamics of DNA and wavelength modulated derivative spectroscopy. Most recently, he has presented papers at national conferences on research administration in the area of technology transfer and developing intellectual property policies.

Dorfman is a member of the American Physical Society, the Council on Undergraduate Research, the Society of Research Administration (SRA), and the National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA). He serves on the Region 6 (California, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, Hawaii) Regional Advisory Council for NCURA.
