Educational Opportunity Program

Learning Outcome 1: Fall Semester Counseling Session

After attending their initial fall semester appointment with their EOP counselor, a freshman EOP student will have an academic plan and be able to identify at least three EOP and University resources to assist them in their academic and social transition to the University. These resources can include services such as Financial Aid, the Career Center, the Cross Cultural Centers, and the Office for Students with Disabilities.

Assessment Measures

Appointments scheduled during the fall semester will be assessed. Only “first-time” appointments will be included; if a student has a follow-up visit with their counselor, it will not be evaluated in this manner. A short paper survey will be administered following the appointment to collect immediate feedback while students are still engaged in the counselor’s office.

The following holistic and prescriptive advising questions are examples of what will be asked of students to achieve this outcome:

  • How are you doing with your classes?
  • What challenges are you experiencing this semester?
  • What type of assistance or support do you need to be successful?
  • Are you currently working, and if so, how many hours?
  • How does your family support you with your educational goals, if at all?
  • Do you reside on campus or do you commute?
  • Did you know that EOP students can apply for CalFresh benefits?

Assessment Data Collection Plan

Data will be collected via an electronic survey administered to students mid-semester.

Existing Data

Due to the nature of this outcome, there is no existing data to compare against this year’s cohort. However, with the recent implementation of EAB, we will be able to accurately demonstrate the overall success of creating student academic plans. The mid-semester survey will also reveal whether students can successfully identify helpful resources.

Analysis of Results

The Research Associate will conduct the necessary data analysis and provide results of her research to the Associate Director and Director.

Use of Results

The results will be shared at a management team meeting and with the Student Life Assessment Council. Information will then be shared with counselors for feedback on best practices and potential changes to the appointment process.

  • Student Life Domain: Personal, Social, and Professional Identity Development
  • Institutional Strategic Priority: Student Success
  • Institutional Learning Outcome: Knowledge: Mastery of Content and Processes of Inquiry

Learning Outcome 2: Workshops

As a result of attending three required workshops, EOP students will effectively demonstrate an increased understanding of how their personal, social, and professional identity impacts their ability to be successful in school.

Assessment Measures

Proof of participation is submitted via sign-in sheets and/or blue slips/cards. Attendance data will be entered into a database to identify types of programs attended, dates of participation, and completion of requirements. Data regarding students’ understanding of identity will also be collected via an electronic survey administered mid-semester.

Assessment Data Collection Plan

Data will be collected as students complete their participation cards and submit them to the EOP office throughout the fall semester. Attendance sign-in sheets will be submitted to the Associate Director by the Counselor who facilitated the EOP workshop.

Existing Data

Identify whether students were special or conditional admits. Determine whether conditional admits are completing this requirement prior to the November benchmark at a higher rate than their special admit colleagues.

Analysis of Results

The Research Associate will conduct the necessary data analysis and provide results of her research to the Associate Director and Director.

Learning Outcome 3: Supplemental Instruction

By enrolling in the EOP Supplemental Instruction (SI) Program, EOP students will successfully complete their first-year GE math class during the fall semester.

Assessment Measures

EOP students who complete GE math SI will form the study cohort. Analysis will include: how many EOP students enrolled in the SI class and whether SI participants passed their class at a higher rate than those who did not participate. Focus groups will be conducted to hear students’ opinions on whether SI impacted their performance.

Assessment Data Collection Plan

Grades from the fall semester will be used. Focus groups will be arranged for spring 2019.

Questions that will be asked during the focus groups include:

  1. In what ways was SI helpful to you in your GE math course?
  2. What specific strategies, practices, or resources helped you to be more effective in mastering key concepts, studying, and meeting course requirements?
