Events and Activities

A Unique Partnership and Opportunity

  • (Increased Interactions) The close proximity of the universities encourages more research interactions, leading to higher productivity and deeper understanding.
  • (Underrepresented Participation) Impressive recruitment, outreach, and professional development activities with potential to broaden participation.
  • (Retention and Degree Attainment) Innovative activities, such as summer retreats, career exploration, and industry interactions, are likely to impact student retention.
  • (Increased Research Opportunities) The SEED grant program incentivizes student participation in research.
  • (Collaborative Curriculum Development) Gain a deep understanding of MSE students needs to develop a comprehensive MSE curriculum collaboratively.
  • (Mentoring) Cal State LA students take advantage of the "Dual Mentorship" program, which is provided by faculty from both Cal State LA and UCI. UCI also offers "Near Peer Mentoring," providing students with the opportunity to learn firsthand from Ph.D. scholars who serve as more than academic mentors. By connecting at a peer level, mentors offer a network of support capable of connecting with a deeper understanding of the student's world, beyond the academics.
  • (Faculty Access) Access to multiple faculty advisors increases personalized attention and growth; student also gets the opportunity to learn the style of different labs and working styles.
  • (Fostering Students' Professional Identity) Increased interaction with direct access to multiple faculty, advisors, labs, techniques, and processes enables students to tailor their approach, developing their own unique professional identity and defining a niche in the field they are pursuing.
  • (Peer Mentors and Reciprocity) Mutually beneficial for Ph.D. students who develop and practice their skills
