Campus Outdoor Lighting

Campus

The Campus Outdoor Light Project is an Initiative to improve campus safety and sustainability by upgrading outdated exterior lighting across campus. This project focuses on replacing aging High Intensity Discharge (HID) luminaires with energy-efficient LED fixtures, reducing energy consumption, lowering operational costs, and enhancing visibility for pedestrians and vehicles.

As the project progresses beyond the initial planned phases, additional areas of campus will undergo similar lighting upgrades, further enhancing campus safety and sustainability.

Transforming Campus Lighting For A Brighter Future

Our campus is undergoing significant lighting upgrades to enhance safety and sustainability. We are implementing energy-efficient LED lights and motion sensors to reduce energy consumption while improving visibility. Key areas will receive enhanced illumination, ensuring a welcoming environment for all.

Lighting

Benefits of the Project

  1. Enhanced Safety - Improved lighting coverage creates a well-lit environment, increasing visibility for students, faculty, and staff walking or driving through campus at night.
  2. Energy Efficiency - LED technology consumes significantly less power than HID fixtures, reducing the campus's overall energy demand.
  3. Cost Savings - Lower energy consumption translates into substantial financial savings, helping fund future campus sustainability projects.
  4. Environmental Impact - Reduced energy usage contributes to the university's commitment to sustainability by lowering its carbon footprint.
  5. Low Maintenance - LED fixtures have a longer lifespan and require less maintenance compared to traditional HID lights, reducing long-term operational costs.

January 2025 Report

jan 25 - report 2

The January 2025 Inner Campus Light Survey, conducted by the University, identified 225 non-functional lights across multiple campus locations. This poses potential safety risks, reduced visibility, and aesthetic concerns that impact the student experience. To address this, a structured repair and replacement action plan has been developed focusing on energy efficiency, long-term cost savings, and enhanced campus safety.

Key Findings
  • Total Lights Off/Dim: 225
  • Highest Impact Location: King Hall (45 non-functional lights)
  • Primary Issues Identified: Burnt-out bulbs, aging fixtures, stolen copper, and electrical failures in multiple buildings
  • Safety Concerns: Areas with poor lighting include high-traffic student pathways, academic buildings, and administrative areas

June 2025 Report

june 25 - report

Subsequent walk-through inspections across the broader exterior areas uncovered over 400 non-functional lights in total. To streamline reporting, the campus was divided into regional zones.

This stacked column chart illustrates the number of outdoor lights that are damaged versus those that have been successfully repaired across various CSULA campus regions between March and June 2025.

•    West Campus reported the highest number of damaged lights (140), with 33 successfully repaired, and 107 still pending repair.
•    East Campus follows with 98 total damaged, 80 pending repairs, and 18 completed repaired lights.
•    South Campus shows a substantial repair effort—48 lights fixed out of 108 total, leaving 60 still in need of attention.
•    Southeast Campus had 59 damaged lights, with 11 already repaired.
•    Central, North, and Northwest sectors reported lower numbers, with only 21, 5, and 3 damaged lights, respectively, and no recorded repairs in these regions during this time frame.

The chart highlights priority areas for ongoing lighting maintenance and supports safety, infrastructure, and planning initiatives.
