Students pursuing a California teaching credential at Cal State LA can also earn an M.A. in TESOL. This pathway combines credential preparation with advanced study in applied linguistics and multilingual education.
Approved credential coursework may count toward M.A. in TESOL requirements, helping many students complete both programs more efficiently and expand their career options.
How the Pathway Works
- Apply to either an eligible California teaching credential program or the M.A. in TESOL. If your primary objective is to earn a teaching credential, we recommend applying to the teaching credential program before submitting an application to the M.A. in TESOL.
- Apply to the other program in a later admission cycle. Cal State LA does not allow applications to two programs for the same semester. The M.A. in TESOL admits students in Fall and Spring.
- After admission to the M.A. in TESOL, meet with the TESOL Graduate Advisor.
- Create an approved program plan identifying eligible credential coursework and fieldwork.
- Complete the remaining requirements for both programs.
Depending on the credential program and approved plan, credential courses may fulfill up to four M.A. in TESOL electives, and credential fieldwork may satisfy the TESOL practicum. With these substitutions, students may need to complete only the five remaining TESOL core courses.
Shared coursework varies by credential program and requires formal advising and approval.
