Refine Your Strategy

Match Your Style to the Industry

Cover letters can be written in different styles. Choose the one that fits the expectations of your field.

  • Traditional: Best for formal fields (e.g., research, healthcare, law). Uses full paragraphs and polished, structured writing.
  • Modern: Best for business or fast-paced roles. Uses clear, easy-to-scan sections that get to the point quickly.

Both styles share the same goal: show how you meet the job’s needs.

Target What the Employer Needs

Your cover letter explains why this role and this organization—not just that you need a job.

Go beyond stating that you are a student. Focus on how the role and the organization’s mission connect to your career purpose and how you want to contribute.

Avoid repeating your résumé. Share brief examples of how you’ve supported similar needs, and show how your skills can help the organization meet its goals.

Follow Up with Your Cover Letter

After applying, send your cover letter and résumé directly to the hiring manager or department. If you haven’t heard back after about two weeks, this is a great time to follow up.

This can help your application move beyond the recruiter, who is matching résumés to the job, and reach the hiring manager, your potential supervisor, who understands the work and your potential fit.
