Academic Senate Staff Senator Candidate - Griselda Arellanes

Name: Griselda Arellanes

Department: Kinesiology and Nutritional Science

My interest in serving as a staff representative has much to do with my love of the CSU, Los Angeles campus.  My experience with Cal State, Los Angeles began with my admittance into the bachelors program in Liberal Studies in 1995.  Raised by two immigrant parent from Mexico, who like all parent want their children to be successful and attain better opportunities.  It was instilled in the minds of my brothers, sisters and I that accomplishing a college education was not an option. It was a obligation.    So straight out of high school I attended community college.  Once completing my general education I transferred to CSULA.  Stepping onto the campus I immediately fell in love.  My experience on the campus as a student was great.  I loved the diversity of the student population and faculty on campus.  I have many countless memories of time spent on campus, participating in student events and eating King Taco every chance I could.  I finally reached my goal of graduation Fall 1997, walking the stage in the spring  graduation commencement in 1998 was a an overwhelming feeling.  As the 1st in my family to earn a college degree it was a enormous accomplishment, one that I am grateful for.  I went on to earn a Master’s Degree at another institution and worked in corporate American for a few years.  In November. 2004 CSU, Los Angeles came back into my life.  I applied for and accepted an Administrative Support Coordinator Position.  As we all know on occasion it may take some time to get things approved on campus so I did not officially start my position until March 2005. Here we are 13 years later and I am still here as a campus employee.  I love my job helping student reach their goal of graduation and assisting faculty with what they need to make that possible.

If selected, I am committed to serving as one of two staff senators in the Academic Senate.  Thank you for your consideration of my self-nomination.  Dr. Ray de Leon, Director of the School of Kinesiology & Nutritional Science has been informed of my self-nomination submission and has endorsed my nomination.
