CSULA School of Social Work in Ghana
In summer of 2007, students and faculty from the School of Social Work, together with colleagues from UCLA and CSU Long Beach, spent a month in Ghana doing full-time social work internships at local agencies. They stayed in the dorms at the University of Ghana in Accra, and became acquainted with some of the students and faculty from the School of Social Work there. Field placements included a correctional residence for boys, a general hospital run by the police department, a domestic violence unit of the police department, a street outreach program in the worst sections of Ghana, and a refugee camp for Nigerians, among others. Time was reserved on Fridays for lectures on the history and government of Ghana, and on Saturdays for field trips to the local points of interest, including Elmira Castle.
They returned from Ghana with great respect for the courage and dedication of Ghanaian social workers, and with renewed appreciation for the resources available here in our country. This trip has turned into an annual outing. For more information, please contact Dr. Dale Weaver
