| Cuban Artist Will Paint Mural for Cal State L.A. Los Angeles, CA -- Renowned Cuban artist and muralist Zaida del Rio will produce a mural for the University-Student Union at California State University, Los Angeles during her campus visit from March 22 to April 9, 2002. The mural project is sponsored by Cal State L.A.Âs Latin American Studies Program, in collaboration with the UniversityÂs Cross Cultural Resource Center and the University-Student Union. The mural, which will be executed on canvas, will be installed on the first floor of the University-Student Union. A reception in honor of the artist will take place in the Cal State L.A. Alumni Lounge after the unveiling of her U-SU mural project on Friday, April 5, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Some of del RioÂs works will also be for sale at this time. This event is open to the public, and all are welcome. Zaida del Rio was born in Guadalupe, Cuba in 1954. She received her art training at CubaÂs Escuela de Arte and Instituto Superior de Arte, and at the Ãcole des Beaux Arts in ParÃs. She is a member of the Union Nacional de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba and the International Association of Plastic Artists. Her art combines the myths and histories of CubaÂs many cultures. Known also as a printmaker and textile designer, del Rio has also illustrated several books, among them, La consagracion de la primavera by CubaÂs great novelist, essayist and statesman Alejo Carpentier. Cal State L.A. is located at the intersection of the 10 and 710 freeways, at the Eastern Avenue exit of the San Bernardino (10) Freeway. Public parking is available at 50 cents per hour in Lots A, C, F, G and Parking Structure II, adjacent to the Luckman Fine Arts Complex.
