Cal State L.A. is top undergraduate origin of Hispanic doctorate recipients

Los Angeles, CA -- Cal State L.A. is among the top 50 baccalaureate institutions in the nation producing Hispanic doctorates in the fields of science and engineering, according to recent compilations in the National Science Foundation on Women, Minorities, and Persons with Disabilities in Science and Engineering (Jan. 2012).

Cal State L.A. is also one of only two public universities in Los Angeles County to make the list. The report provides statistical information about the participation of women, minorities, and persons with disabilities in science and engineering education and employment. The data is based on an Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System Completions Survey administered from 2005-2009.

“This institutional achievement is the consequence of all the hard work of the campus community—faculty, administrators and staff—who support student efforts to pursue education to the Ph.D.,” said Carlos Gutiérrez, professor of chemistry and director of the Minority Opportunities in Research (MORE) Programs at Cal State L.A.

A total of 17 CSULA graduates, who were MORE participants, are beginning doctorate programs this fall at such prestigious universities as Princeton, Purdue, Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UCLA.

MORE Programs are funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of General Medical Sciences, the National Science Foundation, and the American Chemical Society. All focus on preparing students for success in graduate programs leading to the Ph.D.
