Chemist takes polymer study on the road
Iowa State’s Jeffries-EL is Cal State L.A.’s 2013 Ferguson Lecturer
Los Angeles, CA – “Taking the Road Less Travelled: My Journey to the Ivory Tower”—Cal State L.A.’s Lloyd N. Ferguson Distinguished Lecture Series for 2013—will be presented on Friday, Feb. 8, 1 p.m., in Cal State L.A.’s Golden Eagle Ballroom.
Malika Jeffries-EL, an associate professor of chemistry at Iowa State University, will deliver the lecture.
Recognized as one of the top up-and-coming polymer scientists in the country, Jeffries-EL’s research focuses on the development of organic semiconductors—materials that combine the processing properties of polymers with the electronic properties of semiconductors. (Polymer is a large, complex molecule built from smaller molecules joined together in a repeating pattern.)
Most recently, Jeffries-EL garnered the American Chemical Society’s Women Chemist Committee Rising Star award. Her accolades include the 3M untenured faculty award, the Emerald Honors for most promising minority scientist, the 2009 Lloyd Ferguson Award from the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers, the National Science Foundation CAREER award, and the ISU-College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Diversity Award.
Jeffries-EL has authored more than 20 publications, received more than 900 citations and given more than 65 lectures domestically and abroad. She received her bachelor’s degrees in chemistry and Africana studies at Wellesley College and both her master’s degree and Ph.D. in chemistry from The George Washington University.

Jeffries-EL will also present a research seminar, entitled “Design and Synthesis of Conjugated Polymers for Advanced Applications,” on Thursday, Feb. 7, from 4 to 5 p.m., in Biological Sciences 144, on the CSULA campus. This event is free to the public.
Established in 1995 in honor of the late Lloyd N. Ferguson, Cal State L.A.’s emeritus professor of chemistry, the distinguished lecture brings science experts to the Cal State L.A. campus annually. The lecture is sponsored by the College of Natural and Social Sciences and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Cal State L.A.
