 | June 3rd Concert at Cal State L.A. Supports First-Ever Latin Music Student Ensemble Visit to Cuba Los Angeles, CA -- The Cal State L.A. Latin Jazz Ensemble has been invited by the Centro de Investigacion y Desarollo de La Musica Cubana (CIDMUC) to visit Cuba to perform and participate in master classes and rehearsals with top Cuban musicians. The two-week visit, from December 8 to December 23, 2001, will culminate in public performances both in Havana, Matanzas and possibly Pinar del Rio.The Cal State L.A. Latin Jazz Ensemble was formed two years ago and has been recognized as one of the best student ensembles in California performing Latin Jazz, Salsa, and Afro-Cuban music. The ensemble members represent the multicultural diversity that has made Cal State L.A. one of the most culturally diverse campuses in the United States. This ensemble comprises of flute, trumpets, trombone, saxophones, rhythm section (including authentic Latin Percussion), string section and vocals. Latin Jazz Ensemble Director Paul De Castro says that this trip to Cuba is significant for the participating Cal State L.A. students because they will visit the birthplace of the very music they are studying. The trip is also a historic one, notes De Castro, as it is the first time a student ensemble from the United States dedicated to the performance of Cuban music will visit the island. A fundraiser concert in support of this trip will take place on Sunday, June 3, 2001, at 3 p.m., in the Luckman Theatre, on the Cal State L.A. campus. For this occasion, the Cal State L.A. Latin Jazz Ensemble will be joined by the following guest musicians: Cuban piano legend Frank Emilio Flynn, Grammy nominee Bobby Rodriguez on trumpet, violinists Lesa Terry and Pablo Mendez, and bassists Carlos del Puerto Jr. and Rigoberto Lopez.
