Cal State L.A.
Athletics Hall of Fame
Inducts Three at its
15th Annual Event

Los Angeles, CA - March 3, 1999 - The Athletics Hall of Fame at California State University, Los Angeles has inducted Bill Mallory, men's basketball; Abdom Piñon, baseball; and Jennifer Uyeda, women's tennis, during an annual awards ceremony held at the Tower Restaurant in the Transamerica Building, downtown Los Angeles.

Since its inception in 1985, Cal State L.A. Athletics has honored more than 80 men and women-including Wimbledon and U.S. Open tennis champion Billie Jean King, two-time Green Bay Packers Super Bowl participant Jim Weatherwax, two-time Olympic track medalist Barbara Ferrell, and 1984 Olympic swim coach Don Gambril-to highlight just a few.

Here's a closer look at our 1999 award honorees:

Bill Mallory, a Los Angeles resident, was a three-year letterwinner for Cal State L.A. from 1972-75 in men's basketball. During that time, he participated in all 78 games played. He finished his Cal State L.A. career as the school's 7th all-time leading scorer with 1,230 points, and as the school's 6th all-time leading rebounder with 767 boards. He led the team in scoring 18 different times and was the team's leading rebounder 27 times. A two-time all-conference honoree (1973-74), Mallory also was a three-time conference Player of the Week award winner. In 1974, he was a member of Cal State L.A.'s NCAA Tournament playoff team. In 1975, he was chosen as Cal State L.A.'s male Athlete of the Year. To date, his .536 (458-854) field goal percentage and his .745 (312-419) free throw percentage marks are still among the best ever recorded at Cal State L.A. He attained single-game career-highs of 30 points and 19 rebounds. After his collegiate career, he played six years of professional basketball in Holland and was a three-time European Most Valuable Player. He is currently a Division I basketball official in California.

Abdom Piñon, a Pico Rivera resident, was a four-year letterwinner with the Golden Eagle baseball team from 1988-91. He became a three-time All-CCAA honoree (First Team twice and Second Team once) and won the Frank J. Candida award in 1990-91. The Candida award is given to a male student-athlete whose athletic achievements have been acknowledged as most superior amongst his peers by the Division staff. Meanwhile, Piñon became the school's third all-time three-peat conference honoree and is among an elite six to have accomplished this feat at Cal State L.A. He is listed in the Cal State L.A. record book five times with four career records. Piñon is the school's career record holder in innings pitched with 365.1. He is also the all-time leader in games started (51) and complete games (20). His most acclaimed record is 22 career wins. He also set a new standard with a single-season record of 10 complete games. Piñon earned his degree at Cal State L.A. and is now a detention service officer for the Los Angeles County Probation Department.

Jennifer Uyeda, a Rolling Hills Estate resident, was a four-year letterwinner in women's tennis from 1986-90. During her senior campaign, she won the 1990 NCAA Division II Doubles championships with her partner Edna Olivarez-Nguyen (a 1996 Cal State L.A. Athletics Hall of Fame inductee). She also claimed ITCA Division II Volvo All-American honors with a sixth place ranking. An All-CCAA First Team selection, Uyeda also excelled in the classroom earning NCAA Academic All-American honors with a 3.47 GPA in criminal justice. In 1991, she was named the CCAA's Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was a Golden Key National Honor Society member. A national Dean's List honoree, her overall collegiate GPA was 3.503. After earning her degree at Cal State L.A. in criminal justice, Uyeda graduated from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Academy. In 1993, she was awarded the Medal of Valor and earned an L.A. City Council commendation. Additionally, she is a six-time California Police Summer Games gold medalist and currently works for the Torrance Police Department.
