| SBC West President/CEO Los Angeles, CA  SBC West President/CEO Chuck Smith, a Cal State L.A. alumnus, will address the Class of 2003 for the 56th Commencement exercises at California State University, Los Angeles on Saturday, June 14, 2003. The graduation ceremony will take place at 8:00 a.m. in the Jesse Owens Stadium, located at the southeast corner of the campus. As president and CEO of SBC West, Chuck Smith oversees more than 50,000 employees who deliver products and services to the companyÂs California and Nevada customers. Smith has held a wide range of senior executive positions for SBC (formerly Pacific Bell) during his 35-year career, including stints in human resources, operations and marketing. Smith joined the company in 1967 after graduating from California State University, Los Angeles with a bachelorÂs degree in social science and additional graduate course work. In 1985, he completed a special graduate program for executives at Carnegie Mellon University. In 2003, Smith received a Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa, from Menlo College recognizing him as a pioneering business leader in the telecommunications industry. Smith was named the fourth Alfred North Whitehead Distinguished Lecturer in Lifelong Learning at the University of Redlands. He is a member of the UC Strategic Review Panel for Educational Outreach, a past executive advisory board member of UC Davis Graduate School of Management, a USC Ambassador, and serves on the board of the UC Berkeley Extension Program. He also serves as an executive advisor for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, corporate advisor to the Magic Johnson Foundation, and board advisor for the Los Angeles Urban LeagueÂs Board of Directors. For the past 10 years, he has chaired the United Negro College Fund Walk-A-Thon in Los Angeles. Smith is vice chair of the board of the Center for Telecommunications Management at USC. He also serves on the boards of the March of Dimes of Northern California, Executive Technology Centers (ETC), Committee on Jobs, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, East Bay Leadership Foundation, San Francisco YMCA CEOs for Kids, and the Los Angeles YMCA Achievers Program. He is a member of the Contra Costa County SheriffÂs posse and the International Association of Chiefs of Police Foundation. He is a founder and past officer of Community NETwork, the association of African American employees at SBC. He also serves on the boards of PWSBC (Professional Women of SBC) and HACEMOS (the Hispanic employees association), and is on the advisory board for Spectrum (the association of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender employees). Smith is a native of Los Angeles. He and his wife, Beryl, have two children.
